Description

The Graduate Resident Advisor (GRA) is a live-in graduate student staff member within The New School residence halls that shares in the comprehensive development and management of the Residential Education program for approximately 2,000 on-campus students and supports the mission of The New School. 

The Graduate Resident Advisor of Recruitment will report to the Assistant Director of Recruitment and Development not only assist with running a residential community of approximately 200-700 students,  but also serve in the Staff Training and Recruitment Retention (S.T.a.R.R) committee. The GRA of Recruitment will assist with student staff recruitment efforts, student staff development initiatives,  departmental operations, and other duties. This role works in conjunction with a team of other Resident Directors and Graduate Resident Advisors across campus to provide a holistic residential student experience. 

Finally, this position will serve in an on-call rotation along with the Resident Directors and other GRAs. This is a part-time, 10-month, live-on position, requiring 20 working office hours to be worked regularly per week spread across Monday-Friday, not including on-call responsibilities. This position serves on-call, and some evening and weekend hours will be expected, especially at certain times such as opening, closing and training. 

In addition to the duties and responsibilities outlined, this position will include up to 10 of the required 20 weekly hours serving in a designated residence hall. In this capacity, the incumbent will assist with a standardized set of operational tasks, which will be established and communicated at the beginning of each semester. These responsibilities are intended to support the effective operation of the residence hall and may vary based on departmental needs.

The GRA appointment is for the 2026-2027 academic year.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Residential Education

  • Support the development, marketing, implementation, management, and assessment of student engagement and community development initiatives utilizing a residential curricular approach grounded in student development theory. 

  • Collaborate with other departments across the university through the Student & Campus Life co-curriculum. 

  • Track engagement of residential students and RA programming to ensure the needs of the community are met. 

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of the residence hall budget. 

  • Maintain a consistent level of visibility within the assigned community and keep routine verbal and visual contact with RAs and residents within the area of responsibility. 

Departmental Operations

  • Serve in an on-call rotation and respond to student incidents as needed. 

  • Assist in facilitating the operational aspects of residence hall openings and closings. 

  • Participate in weekly department-wide staff meetings, weekly building staff meetings, and one-on-one with supervisor. 

  • Participate in departmental events and processes such as Opening/Welcome Week, Family Weekend, student and professional staff recruitment, selection and training, residence hall tours, Admitted Students Days, Open Houses, housing selection, census implementation, room changes and any other events that may arise. 

  • Serve as an active member of  S.T.a.R.R committee, assisting with student staff recruitment initiatives and the planning of student staff training.

Recruitment

  • Assist with the planning and execution of Resident Assistant (RA) and Graduate Resident Advisor informational sessions

  • Assist with the planning of Resident Assistant Winter Training

  • Plan and execute one (1) activity for Resident Assistant Group Process

  • Assist with operational duties in support of student staff recruitment, including but not limited to Residence Hall Community Assistants, RAs, and GRAs

  • Serve in the Staff Training and Recruitment (S.T.a.R.R) Committee

     

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a full-time matriculated graduate student at The New School University.

  • Must be in good standing with the university, including the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards, the Office of Student Accounts, and the Department of Residential Education.

  • Must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 throughout the period of employment.

  • Demonstrated crisis management, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.

  • Experience working with or engaging diverse populations.

  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to work efficiently both independently and collaboratively.

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion when handling sensitive information.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations.

  • Experience creating content for social media platforms.

  • Proficiency with content creation and design tools, including Canva, Photoshop, and Adobe Creative Suite.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience utilizing student information systems, such as housing software is preferred. 

  • Applicants are strongly preferred to have a minimum of one (1) year of Housing and Residential Life paraprofessional or professional experience, serving in a live-in, on-call rotation. 

  • Experience in Google Suite, Microsoft Suite, and Adobe Suite preferred. 

WORK MODE

  • On-Campus Position - Parties in this position are expected to work on-campus during regularly scheduled work hours due to the nature of the work being that which is not feasible, or not in the best interest of the organization, to be performed remotely. #LI-DNI

COMPENSATION

  • Assigned one (1) single bedroom within a University operated residence hall. (estimated value of $24,377 per academic year).

  • A meal plan. (estimated value of $1,775 per semester or $3,550 per academic year)

  • A stipend of $10,000 to be paid out biweekly throughout the time of employment.
