Parks Maintenance Worker I (A5)

This is skilled and semiskilled routine facility maintenance and repair work performing maintenance tasks in parks, park buildings, grounds, open space, landscaped areas and facilities. This is the entry level in the Parks Maintenance Worker series. This is an essential position. 

• Performs general maintenance and repairs for assigned work areas.
• Drives light and heavy trucks and equipment for assigned duties.
• Uses all hand tools and some power equipment as assigned by crew leader.
• Assists in loading and unloading of materials and equipment.
• Assists with special recreation events and seasonal programs.
• Assists in storm and snow removal, heavy or light trucks, duty trucks, blowers, and shovels.
• Collects and disposes of trash throughout all park and recreational areas.
• Orders and retrieves supplies and equipment. 
• Assists Park Maintenance Worker II with projects.
• Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of the use of hand and power tools used in facilities and grounds maintenance and repair.
Working knowledge of the safe use of landscape construction equipment such as tractors, mowers, etc.) and other gardening materials used in the maintenance and repair of park and recreation facilities.
Ability to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in park facilities maintenance.
Ability to operate required equipment and perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs to power tools, vehicles and equipment.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions and read and interpret written reports and directions.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited High School Diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED); and one (1) year of related experience in maintenance or
construction.

This position is designated as Safety Sensitive due to the tasks or duties that the employer reasonably believes could affect the safety and health of the employee performing the task, other individuals, and or may lead to damage to property.

This position is subject to drug and alcohol testing to include pre-employment testing.

Special Qualifications:
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Physical/Mental Demands:
The work is not sedentary and generally the employee may be required to speak, walk, stand, bend, and/or carry light items to include paper, books or files. The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
Balancing ability:  sufficient to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
Climbing ability: sufficient to ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
Crawling ability: sufficient to move about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
Crouching ability: sufficient to bend the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
Feeling ability: sufficient to perceive attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
Dexterity ability: sufficient to pick, hold, or otherwise work, primarily with the whole hand.
Handling ability: sufficient to pick, hold, or otherwise work, primarily with the whole hand.
Hearing ability: sufficient to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to effectively receive detailed information through oral communication and distinguish between different sounds.
Kneeling ability: sufficient to bend legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees. 
Mental Acuity: sufficient to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
Pulling ability: sufficient to use upper extremities to exert force to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
Pushing ability: sufficient to use upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward or outward.
Reaching ability: sufficient to extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
Speaking ability: sufficient to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
Standing ability: Particularly for sustained periods of time. 
Stooping ability: sufficient to bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles. 
Visual ability: sufficient to operate heavy equipment and trucks both by day and night, to observe unsafe conditions of roadways, to read and write reports, correspondence, instructions, etc.
Walking ability: sufficient to move about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or move from one work site to another.

Work Environment:
The work environment entails minimal discomforts that may be associated with an office environment.
Work is performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to self, co-workers or others.
