About the Role
The Associate Director, Animal Welfare Capability & Assurance, provides enterprise leadership for training governance, certification oversight, audit assurance, and continuous improvement across Tyson Foods. This role serves as the primary operational partner to the Senior Director, Enterprise Risk and Public Policy, Animal Welfare COE, translating strategic priorities into consistent, measurable execution across all business units.
Key Responsibilities
Enterprise Training
• Lead enterprise animal welfare training strategy, including curriculum development, implementation, and effectiveness monitoring.
• Establish competency frameworks and set annual training priorities aligned to business unit needs and regulatory standards.
PAACO Certification Governance
• Manage the enterprise PAACO certification and recertification programs, including required participation and continuing education opportunities.
• Ensure ongoing alignment with evolving PAACO requirements.
Audit & Assurance
• Lead coordination and scheduling of internal, customer, third-party, and certification audit programs.
• Drive readiness planning, corrective action governance, trend analysis, and executive-level audit reporting.
• Conduct internal audits in partnership with the COE team.
- Maintain current FarmCheck© audits and update as needed to stay current with industry standards, at a minimum.
Enterprise Governance & Performance Monitoring
• Support enterprise reporting and analysis of Key Welfare Indicators, performance metrics, and continuous improvement activities.
• Prepare executive-level summaries and assessments that surface actionable insights for senior leadership.
- Governance and oversight of delivery of the Tyson animal welfare programs.
- Track and trend data collected on animal welfare and provide reports to business leaders to drive continuous improvement.
- Correlate with Plant Operations to maintain consistency in KWI data collection.
- Provide the business unit leadership expertise/support for customer inquiries; assist in ensuring any customer inquiries (direct or from sales) are connected with the correct business leader for response.
- Corrective action support for regulatory (NR/MOI or enforcement) or audit issues.
- Share notifications of activist activity.
- Provide “hot topic” training for plants.
- Support beef/pork animal Welfare Specialists and Poultry Tech II’s.
Strategic Support to Senior Director
• Act as primary operational partner to the Senior Director, coordinating enterprise initiatives and cross-functional projects.
• Translate strategic priorities into implementation plans and track progress across business units.
External Engagement & Industry Leadership
• Represent Tyson Foods in industry associations, technical working groups, and customer and stakeholder discussions as assigned.
- Support the AW Advisory Panel to provide Tyson with critical insights to assist the company to develop and advance industry leading best practices.
Risk Management & Crisis Support
• Support enterprise risk management and crisis response activities, including foreign animal disease preparedness and activist response.
• Contribute to emerging risk mitigation efforts in coordination with the Senior Director and Chief Risk Officer.
Qualifications
Required
• Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Agriculture, Food Science, or a related field
• PAACO certification required
• 8+ years of progressive animal welfare or related experience, with demonstrated enterprise leadership
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present to senior audiences
• Ability to work cross-functionally across business units in a matrixed organization
Preferred
• Experience with enterprise audit programs and regulatory assurance frameworks
- Advanced degree in a relevant field
