Assistant Professor of Religion

The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Professor in Buddhist Studies at Dickinson College 

The Religion Department invites applications for a tenure-track position in Buddhist Studies with demonstrated competence in the field of Religious Studies at the rank of assistant professor beginning in Fall 2027. We are open to candidates whose work focuses in any era, and in any geographical region (including transnational and diasporic studies of Buddhism). The successful candidate will be able to contribute to campus and department needs in one or more of the following areas: sustainability and development, interreligious encounters, negotiations, and/or dialogue. The teaching load is five courses per year in addition to advising senior theses. 

The successful candidate will hold the title of The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Professor of Buddhist Studies for the first four years in the position and must have a Ph.D. in religious studies or a related field in hand by the start of appointment and demonstrate an ability to teach in Buddhist Studies as well as core Religious Studies courses. Further desirable qualifications include competence in other languages relevant to the study of Buddhism (e.g. Sanskri, Pali, classical Chinese, and/or vernacular Asian language). The Department is seeking outstanding 

candidates with the potential for exceptional teaching and research. Candidates must have the ability to create learning environments that are inclusive and welcoming to all students.

The incoming colleague will teach courses in their area of expertise in addition to the department’s core courses on rotation, including Buddhism; Buddhism and the Environment; Contemplative Practices in Asia; and Religions of Asia. In addition, they will be given support to develop at least two new courses during their pre-tenure cycle; this will include courses that incorporate the faculty’s expertise alongside key themes of sustainability, development, and global exchange.
