Description

Guernsey Electricity is seeking a skilled and safety-focused HGV HIAB Driver & Crane Operator to support the delivery of substation maintenance activities across the electricity distribution network. The role is responsible for the safe operation of HGV vehicles, HIAB cranes, and associated lifting equipment to transport, position, install, and remove electrical infrastructure and materials.  

In addition to driving and lifting operations, the successful candidate will assist the Substation Maintenance Team in carrying out routine and planned maintenance work on substations and distribution network assets, while supporting wider operational requirements across Guernsey Electricity as required.  

This is a hands-on operational role requiring a strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and maintaining the reliability of the island's electricity network.


Key Responsibilities

· Safely operate HGV vehicles for the transportation of equipment, plant, transformers, switchgear, cables, and materials.
· Operate HIAB cranes and lifting equipment in accordance with company procedures, manufacturer guidelines, and relevant legislation.
· Carry out pre-use inspections, routine checks, and defect reporting for vehicles, cranes, and lifting accessories.
· Plan and execute lifting operations safely, including the use of slings, chains, shackles, and lifting beams where required.
· Assist with the installation, replacement, and removal of substation equipment and distribution assets.
· Ensure all transport and lifting activities are completed in compliance with health and safety requirements.


Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

· Valid HGV Licence (Category C or C+E).
· Current HIAB / Lorry Loader Operator Certification.
· Experience operating vehicle-mounted cranes and lifting equipment.
· Forklift Truck (FLT) operating experience.
· Good understanding of safe lifting practices and manual handling techniques.
· Experience working within construction, utilities, engineering, transport, or industrial environments.
· Strong awareness of health, safety, and environmental requirements.
· Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
· Good communication and organisational skills.
· Flexible approach to working hours and operational requirements.
· Safety-focused with a proactive attitude towards risk management.
· Reliable, professional, and dependable.
· Willingness to learn new skills and undertake further technical training.
· Positive team player with a flexible and cooperative approach.
· Capable of working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
· Able to respond calmly and effectively during emergency situations.
