The Opportunity
RETTEW is seeking a Senior Traffic Engineer | Technical Lead to join our Transportation team and help guide the technical delivery and continued growth of our traffic engineering services.
This opportunity is designed for an experienced traffic engineer who wants to remain actively involved in complex technical work while expanding their influence across projects, teams, and client relationships.
You will lead and review traffic engineering analyses, studies, designs, and technical deliverables while serving as a trusted resource for clients, project teams, and developing professionals. You will also help establish technical approaches, strengthen quality standards, mentor staff, and solve complex transportation challenges.
Traffic engineering professionals can develop expertise across different types of projects and services. You do not need to have done everything. We are looking for strong traffic engineering fundamentals, Pennsylvania project experience, professional analysis and modeling experience, sound technical judgment, and demonstrated ability to guide the work of others.
Work Environment
Workplace Designation: Hybrid
Locations: Pittsburgh, Lancaster, Mechanicsburg, or Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania
This position combines regular in-office collaboration with remote-work flexibility, focused technical work, multidisciplinary project coordination, and occasional field, client, or agency activities.
What You'll Do
As a Senior Traffic Engineer | Technical Lead, you will guide the technical delivery of traffic engineering assignments while helping project teams develop practical, data-informed solutions.
You will establish technical approaches, perform and oversee complex analyses, review project deliverables, resolve technical challenges, and help ensure work meets applicable standards and client expectations. You will collaborate closely with Project Managers, engineers, designers, clients, agencies, and other disciplines throughout project delivery.
You will also help strengthen RETTEW’s traffic engineering capabilities by mentoring staff, sharing technical knowledge, improving processes, and contributing to proposals and strategic pursuits.
- Serve as a Technical Lead on traffic engineering projects, providing technical direction, oversight, and quality control.
- Establish appropriate methodologies for complex traffic engineering assignments and guide project teams through execution.
- Lead and review traffic impact studies, operational analyses, signal warrant analyses, traffic signal designs, corridor studies, safety evaluations, and access management assignments.
- Evaluate intersection, corridor, and network performance using accepted traffic engineering principles and professional analysis tools.
- Develop practical recommendations for improving traffic operations, mobility, access, and safety.
- Prepare and review calculations, models, plans, specifications, technical reports, and other project deliverables.
- Confirm that technical work is accurate, consistent, constructible, and compliant with applicable standards and project requirements.
- Interpret and apply applicable PennDOT, Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, MUTCD, AASHTO, municipal, and other agency standards and requirements.
- Coordinate with PennDOT, municipalities, metropolitan planning organizations, clients, and other reviewing agencies.
- Collaborate with Project Managers to align technical scope, schedule, budget, staffing, and deliverable expectations.
- Advise clients and internal teams on traffic operations, safety, permitting, design, and project-delivery considerations.
- Identify complex technical or project-delivery challenges and guide teams toward practical solutions.
- Mentor engineers and designers through technical coaching, project assignments, and constructive review.
- Help develop and maintain technical standards, tools, templates, and quality-control practices.
- Support project scopes, technical approaches, level-of-effort estimates, proposals, and selection interviews.
- Contribute technical insight to client relationships, strategic pursuits, and the continued growth of RETTEW’s traffic engineering services.
- Stay current with evolving traffic engineering standards, tools, technologies, and industry practices.
