Description
Group Tax Manager
Mattioli Woods Group | Hybrid - Leicester or London | Full time
We're hiring an experienced tax professional to take ownership of the Group tax agenda at Mattioli Woods. This isn't a supporting role. You'll be the Group's in-house tax specialist – leading on corporation tax compliance, VAT, digital transformation, and advising the business on everything from acquisitions to restructuring.
What you will own
You will be responsible for:
• corporation tax computations and returns for the Group and its trading subsidiaries, including iXBRL tagging
• current and deferred tax for the annual and interim report and for subsidiary statutory accounts, and the disclosures our auditors test
• the Group’s VAT position in a partly exempt business, including our partial exemption special method, the annual adjustment, and keeping the method fair and reasonable as the business changes
• the tax side of group simplification: hive-ups, intra-group transfers, mergers and liquidations, and the step plans that deliver them
• tax due diligence on acquisitions, and integrating tax positions after completion
• our tax governance framework, including Senior Accounting Officer support, the published tax strategy, the tax risk register and uncertain tax treatment notification
• research and development claims, tax forecasting, and the systems and controls behind our tax reporting, including readiness for Making Tax Digital
• our relationship with HMRC and with our external tax advisers
What we are looking for
You will need:
• CTA or ACA qualification, with hands-on UK corporation tax compliance experience within a group, preparing computations and returns rather than reviewing those prepared by an adviser
• experience of current and deferred tax disclosures for statutory accounts, and of defending them in an external audit
• VAT experience in a partly exempt business, including a partial exemption special method
• exposure to corporate restructuring or transactions and their tax consequences
• the judgement to work as the only tax specialist in the business, knowing what to handle and when to involve our advisers
• strong Excel skills, and the ability to explain a tax outcome clearly to a subsidiary board
Helpful, but we will support you to develop these
• financial services, or another partly exempt sector
• research and development claims, iXBRL tagging and Making Tax Digital
• employment taxes, including P11D reporting, PAYE Settlement Agreements and off-payroll working
• coaching or developing junior colleagues
We welcome applications from candidates with either a practice or an in-house background. Where you meet the essential criteria, we will support your development in the other areas.
Why join us
You will step into a broad and varied tax role with real influence over how the Group manages its compliance and its tax strategy. You will work directly with senior finance colleagues, shape the processes behind our tax reporting, contribute to the development of the wider team, and grow alongside a business that continues to expand through acquisition. We will support your continuing professional development with training where you need it.
