Responsibilities:

Driven by clinical excellence and therapeutic empathy, the Psychiatric Registered Nurse stabilizes acute mental health crises while fostering a safe, therapeutic environment for long-term recovery. By conducting rigorous psychiatric evaluations, managing complex treatment plans, and leading interdisciplinary care teams, the role provides pivotal support to individuals navigating behavioral health challenges. Dedicated to patient advocacy and de-escalation, this position empowers patients and families through targeted psychoeducation, compassionate boundaries, and strict adherence to patient rights.

•    Psychiatric Clinical Resource & Delegation: Directs and delegates patient care assignments to psychiatric technicians, behavioral health aides, and nursing staff based on patient acuity, safety risk levels, and staff capabilities.
•    Direct Care & Crisis Intervention: Maintains clinical competency in direct psychiatric care, conducting mental status assessments, evaluating patient outcomes, executing de-escalation protocols, and dynamically adjusting care plans.
•    Interdisciplinary Care Coordination: Collaborates closely with psychiatrists, therapists, social workers, primary care physicians, families, and community mental health programs to ensure seamless continuity of care.
•    Patient Rights & Ethical Advocacy: Educates patients and families on their legal rights, psychiatric advance directives, and informed consent procedures during admission and ongoing care.
•    Psychoeducation & Skill Building: Assesses learning needs and delivers targeted patient and family teaching on coping strategies, symptom management, and treatment plans using return-demonstration techniques.
•    Safety, Quality & Research Standards: Drives continuous care quality by integrating current psychiatric nursing research, behavioral health guidelines, hospital safety protocols, and clinical equipment proficiency.
•    Milieu Management & Team Cohesiveness: Fosters a safe, therapeutic milieu through clear interprofessional communication, proactive problem-solving, and effective team conflict resolution.
•    Triage & Emergency Response: Performs on-call duties effectively, maintaining strong telephone triage skills to evaluate risk, manage psychiatric emergencies, and coordinate urgent interventions.
•    Specialized Diagnostic Expertise: Directs self-education toward top psychiatric and medical co-morbidities, including depression/anxiety, psychotic disorders, substance dependency, post-surgical care, nutrition, medication compliance, and pain management.
•    Regulatory Supervision & Compliance: Supervises psychiatric aides and ancillary nursing staff in strict adherence to Medicare/Medicaid regulations, state mental health laws, and hospital policies.

Qualifications:

• Associate’s degree in nursing
• New Mexico RN License required.
• BLS required
