Position profile for safe, reliable operation of high-speed metal-forming equipment
DEPARTMENT Manufacturing / Operations REPORTS TO Production Supervisor / Line Lead
CLASSIFICATION [Non-exempt / Exempt] SCHEDULE [Shift / Days / Hours]
LOCATION [Facility / City] REVISION DATE [Month Day, Year]
Position Summary The Cupper Operator sets up, operates, monitors, and supports a high-speed cupping press that forms metal coil stock into cups used in the manufacture of two-piece cans. The position is responsible for maintaining safe equipment operation, stable product flow, dimensional and visual quality, accurate production records, and timely escalation of mechanical, tooling, material, or quality concerns.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities • Perform pre-start checks of the cupping press, guards, safety devices, lubrication systems, scrap-handling equipment, conveyors,
tooling, material feed, and required documentation.
• Load or verify approved coil stock and related materials; confirm material identity, lot information, gauge, width, and production order before use.
• Start, operate, monitor, adjust, and shut down the cupper and associated equipment in accordance with approved procedures and assigned operating limits.
• Monitor cup formation, press speed, material tracking, lubrication, scrap removal, and downstream flow to maintain a stable and efficient process.
• Conduct required visual and dimensional checks on formed cups using approved gauges or measuring devices; identify splits, wrinkles, scratches, variation, contamination, or other defects.
• Make authorized process adjustments and perform basic troubleshooting; stop the equipment and escalate when conditions exceed training, authority, or established limits.
• Complete changeovers, coil changes, line clearance, cleaning, and start-up verification while protecting tooling, product identity, and material traceability.
• Accurately record production quantities, scrap, downtime, inspection results, material usage, equipment conditions, and shift activities in required systems or forms.
• Coordinate with Quality, Maintenance, Tooling, Engineering, Warehouse, and downstream operators during repairs, inspections, trials, and production interruptions.
• Maintain an orderly work area and support waste reduction, equipment reliability, workplace organization, and continuous- improvement activities.
Safety, Quality, and Compliance Expectations • Follow all machine-guarding, energy-control, lockout/tagout, personal protective equipment, material-handling, and emergency-
response requirements.
• Never bypass or defeat safety devices. Immediately report unsafe conditions, unusual noise or vibration, leaks, jams, damaged tooling, near misses, and injuries.
• Use only current work instructions, specifications, inspection methods, and authorized machine settings.
• Protect product quality and traceability; segregate or identify suspect material and promptly report nonconforming conditions.
• Maintain complete, legible, timely, and accurate records and support investigations or corrective actions when requested.
