Role Description
The Creative Lead is a senior visual and conceptual leader responsible for setting the creative vision across pharmaceutical and life sciences accounts. This role owns the design practice and creative delivery across one or more client accounts, overseeing multidisciplinary teams to produce strategically grounded, visually compelling solutions that translate complex science into clear, impactful stories.
Working closely with Group Creative Directors, brand managers, medical writers, and cross-functional stakeholders, the Creative Lead drives omnichannel campaigns for both patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs), ensuring all outputs strictly comply with pharmaceutical regulatory and medical-legal review (MLR) requirements while maintaining creative excellence. This role manages design leads and copywriters, contributes to business development, and shapes the long-term creative culture of the team.
Key Responsibilities
Creative Strategy & Concept Development
Lead and own creative solutions R&D, creative strategy, concept development, and visual articulation for integrated campaigns across print, digital, social, experiential, and video.
Build bold marketing concepts and scientific narratives for product launches, multichannel advertising, and digital platforms.
Translate strategic insights into compelling visual ideas that elevate client brands and push creative boundaries.
Partner closely with copy leads to drive cohesive creative thinking across all deliverables.
Design, Art Direction & Quality
Direct the creation of visual systems, campaign identities, and design approaches across all formats.
Guide photo direction, illustration style, typography choices, color palettes, layout decisions, and data visualization.
Oversee quality control for all visual deliverables, ensuring brand consistency and message alignment.
Apply accessibility best practices (color, contrast, size) across all visual design decisions.
Provide hands-on directions to designers and art directors throughout the creative process.
Regulatory Compliance
Collaborate with medical, legal, and regulatory teams to ensure all creative assets comply with pharmaceutical promotional review processes (e.g., OPDP guidelines, MLR reviews).
Ensure creative innovation is achieved within the boundaries of strict pharma regulatory requirements.
Maintain scientific accuracy across all promotional and educational materials.
Team Leadership & Mentorship
Manage, mentor, and guide copywriters, designers, art directors, and external agencies.
Provide constructive feedback and model creative excellence to develop junior and mid-level talent.
Foster an inclusive, collaborative creative culture within the department.
Manage design leads and oversee resourcing, timelines, estimations, and forecasts across accounts.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Client Engagement
Partner with Strategy, Account, Project Management, Medical Writers, Brand Managers, and Science Experts to ensure factual accuracy and strategic alignment.
Present creative concepts confidently to internal stakeholders and external clients.
Contribute to new business efforts by developing conceptual directions and participating in pitch presentations.
Collaborate with production, UX, and development teams on multichannel executions leading GenAI practice and latest tools.
Support brand planning and tactical development in partnership with cross-functional leads
Required Skills & Qualifications
Experience
8–10 years of relevant experience in visual/graphic design and creative team management, preferably in pharmaceutical, healthcare, or biotech creative agencies.
Proven experience in pharmaceutical art direction or design within creative or advertising agencies, including AOR and product launch experience.
5+ years in a client-facing creative role with strong presentation skills.
Experience driving user-centered design processes and rapid prototyping (from sketching to digital prototypes).
Technical Skills
Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, XD, and InDesign (required).
Advanced proficiency in Figma and Gen AI tools.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office: PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
Strong knowledge of UI/UX principles: User Experience, Design Thinking, Interaction Design, Accessibility Design, Usability Testing, and Competitive Analysis.
Working knowledge of Agile, Waterfall, or other project methodologies.
Illustration specialist or Data Visualization skills are an advantage.
Domain Knowledge
Scientific literacy: ability to read and interpret dense clinical trial data and medical content.
Deep familiarity with pharmaceutical promotional review processes (OPDP, MLR).
Strong understanding of omnichannel campaign delivery for both HCP and patient audiences.
Soft Skills
Strong portfolio demonstrates aesthetic and strategically creative solutions across multiple formats and channels.
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish (required for LATAM and North America clients).
Creative problem-solving with the ability to brainstorm, ideate, and respond quickly with innovative, original concepts.
Open-minded, flexible, and optimistic adapting to change.
Strong interpersonal skills for requirements gathering and communication across teams, workstreams, and clients.
Desired Skills
Experience in rare disease or oncology therapeutic areas.
Experience in multinational pharmaceutical organizations or large healthcare agencies.
Experience working with medical affairs and scientific communication teams.
Knowledge of digital accessibility standards (WCAG) and inclusive design principles.
Familiarity with emerging design technologies, AI-assisted design tools, and production best practices.
Track record of contributing to new business pitches and agency growth initiatives.
Bachelor’s degree in visual communications, Graphic Design, or a related field.
