Position Overview
The Courier is responsible for the timely and secure transport of laboratory samples and materials between collection sites and designated laboratory branches. This role ensures the integrity of specimens, maintains accurate documentation, and delivers exceptional service in compliance with safety and traffic regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Load all necessary suppliers needed for the daily pickups
- Complete daily pick up schedule in a timely manner
- Deliver all daily picks to branches at the end of your shift
- Handle lab samples in a safe and efficient manner
- Safely operate a company vehicle and obey all traffic laws
- Utilize handheld electronic device to manage daily picks up
- Evaluate traffic patterns, alternative routes, and weather conditions as needed
Secondary Tasks
- Provide professional and courteous service when interacting with clients and branch staff.
- Identify and resolve minor issues related to pickup or delivery delays.
Equipment and Instrumentation Used
- Company vehicle
- Handheld electronic tracking device (for pickup and delivery confirmation)
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) for handling samples
Requirements
Technical Requirements and Skills
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Strong time management and punctuality
- Attention to detail in handling and documenting samples
- Ability to follow route instructions and adjust to unexpected conditions
- Basic customer service and problem-solving skills
- Ability to maintain accurate records using digital tools
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of driving and sitting while operating a company vehicle.
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, and reaching while loading and unloading samples and supplies.
- Must be able to lift, carry, and move sample coolers, boxes, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds using proper and safe lifting techniques.
- Must be able to work in varying environmental and weather conditions, including exposure to heat, cold, rain, and snow during pickups and deliveries.
- Must be able to safely handle and transport laboratory samples, maintaining temperature and chain-of-custody requirements.
- Frequent use of hands and arms to operate steering controls, load materials, and manage handheld devices.
- Must be able to visually read maps, directions, and labels; specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Must be able to communicate clearly and professionally with clients and laboratory staff.
- Must be able to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as gloves or safety vests, during sample handling and delivery.
