From intent-driven product discovery and context-aware recommendations to seamless checkout, smart substitutions, and end-to-end order tracking, Sparky transforms the entire shopping journey into a fluid, conversational experience.
As an (IND) Principal Software Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, driving innovation in distributed systems and AI/ML integration. You will oversee the full software development lifecycle, ensuring alignment with strategic roadmaps and technical excellence. This role requires providing technical leadership, mentoring engineering teams, and collaborating across functions to solve complex problems. You will champion best practices in architecture and continuous improvement, contributing to Walmart’s technology vision while delivering high-impact solutions that serve millions of customers and associates.
What you will do
In this role, you will own the technical roadmap and architecture for multiple initiatives within the Conversational AI platform. The responsibilities include:
• Partner with key business stakeholders and be a thought leader in the Conversational AI space for driving the development and planning of POCs and production AI solutions.
• Translate business requirements into strategies, initiatives, and projects. Align these with business strategy and objectives. Drive the execution of the deliverables.
• Design, build, test and deploy cutting edge AI solutions at scale, impacting millions of customers worldwide.
• Lead multiple initiatives within the platform, with focus on efficiency, innovation, and leverage.
• Collaborate with the applied scientists, ML engineers, software engineers and product managers to develop next generation of AI assistant experiences.
• Be up-to date on industry trends in the latest Generative AI, and AI assistant architecture patterns (e.g. agent chaining, COT, RAG, LLM guardrails etc)
• Provide technical leadership, guidance and mentorship to highly skilled and motivated engineers in the team.
• Lead innovation and efficiency through the complete problem-solving cycle, from approach to methods to development and results.
• Partner and engage with associates in other regions for delivering the best services to customers around the globe.
• Ensure technical ownership by maintaining quality standards, resolving issues, and driving projects to completion
• Foster continuous improvement through experimentation, knowledge sharing.
What you'll bring:
• Extensive experience in platform engineering leadership, delivering scalable infrastructure and reusable tooling aligned with strategic roadmaps.
• Proven expertise in cloud-native architecture and distributed system design ensuring high availability and fault tolerance.
• Strong technical execution skills managing full software development lifecycle, including CI/CD, testing, and incident response.
• Proficiency in AI/ML integration and building intelligent software systems using languages such as Python, Java.
• Demonstrated ability to provide technical mentorship and influence architectural decisions across teams.
• Commitment to continuous improvement, innovation, and operational excellence.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills with cross-functional stakeholders.
• Experience with building LLM-powered product features.
• Experience working with geographically distributed teams.
• MS or PhD in Computer Science or a related field — or equivalent practical experience.
• 15+ years of software engineering experience with a proven track record of leading large-scale distributed systems in production.

What you'll do:
- You’ll have the opportunity to work with large-scale low latency systems interfacing with multiple subsystems and data models.
- Build scalable and effective APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) and services for real-time inferencing ML models.
- Build APIs and services to deploy and orchestrate end-to-end services.
- Build and optimize distributed data processing jobs.
- Build and manage data pipelines, integrating data from multiple sources and ensuring data accuracy and completeness.
- Stay up to date with industry trends and best practices in software engineering and machine learning.
What you'll bring:
- Strong background in computer science: algorithms and data structures with degree in B.E./B. Tech/M Tech/MS in Computer Science or related technical field.
- Strong coding skills with Java and ReactJS.
- Proven experience in writing extensible and testable software.
- Proficient with design patterns, OOP, and/or Functional programming.
- Experience in designing the UI
- Proficient in designing robust, large scale backend system, considering for
- performance, scalability, security, and maintainability.
- Experience with Docker containerization, Kubernetes, GCP, and/or Azure.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, able to work independently and in a team.
- Experience with ML algorithms, tools, and ML systems is nice to have.
- 14+ years of experience in design and development of high scale applications development in product based companies or R&D divisions.
- 8+ years of experience building micro-services using Java
