Communication and Corrections Officer

Position Summary
Performs emergent and non-emergent dispatch center services for Swift County and the Cities of Benson and Appleton.  Performs control, observation and supervision of inmates to ensure the maintenance of security, safety, operational rules, and policies of the Swift County Jail.

Scope of Responsibility 
Responsible for dispatching emergency and non-emergency 911 calls; entering data; booking 
suspects; overseeing the custody, welfare and security of inmates; logging inmate activity; 
assisting deputies with booking and related work.
Essential Functions 
A. Answers 911 calls and dispatches emergency response units - fire, ambulance, police and 
first responders. 
B. Responds to calls from members of the public; provides information or referrals. 
C. Answers, responds to and records all radio calls from police officers and emergency 
response units. 
D. Enters information on missing persons, wanted individuals, and stolen property; enters 
warrants and hot files; runs criminal histories for handgun permits, housing checks, 
probation; runs criminal history checks for local agencies; and communicates with other 
agencies. 
E. Creates LETG events for all law enforcement, fire and ambulance in Swift County; 
documents all events in which deputies and emergency services are dispatched.  
F. Notifies the public of dangerous weather conditions using the public alert system, code red 
and emergency procedures; tests the emergency alert system.  
G. Assists the public in person or by phone when issuing a complaint or requesting 
information; issues and maintains records of burning permits. 
H. Operates the security system in the Law Enforcement Center; opens secure doors for daily 
operations of the jail and office and Law Enforcement Center. 
I. Monitors the Court House and LEC including the jail area with cameras and audio. 
J. Ensures inmate safety, conducts well-being checks; logs inmate activities and behaviors; 
restrains inmates prior to court appointments; uses force and crisis intervention when 
required; administers CPR when necessary. 
K. Ensures proper functioning of communication equipment; communicates with inmates; 
supervises volunteers and inmates during scheduled programming; maintains a head count 
of inmates in custody; tracks visitors; escorts inmates to programs and work; and maintains 
a daily accounting of inmate funds. 
L. Books inmates into jail; determines medical history, confirms medication is approved by 
pharmacist or physician; takes urine sample when required; fingerprints, photographs and 
issues clothing to inmates; classifies inmates using criminal history prior to moving them 
into a cell; PBT inmates as needed.  
M. Maintains inmate monetary accounts; assists cooking meals and laundry; provides inmates 
with clean clothes; distributes hygiene supplies and mail; dispenses medication.  
N. Contacts court, attorneys, probation officers, Human Services and medical facilities on 
behalf of inmates; monitors inmates schedules; orders supplies and groceries; keeps the 
jail clean and sanitized. 
O. Operates Intoxilyzer when necessary and certified. 
P. Performs CCO duties as assigned by the CCO Supervisor; assists the CCO Supervisor to 
maintain training records and TAC duties. 
Q. Conducts various tests for Community Correction or other agencies.  

Additional Functions 
A. Attends training, education and meeting sessions. 
B. Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
Minimum Qualifications
A. High school diploma or equivalent. 
B. Ability to successfully complete the following training/certifications: CPR/First Aid within 6 
months, AED Training, Defensive Tactics/Use of Force, Medication Distribution within 1 
month, Fire Extinguisher within 1 year, State Records Management Training, Radio 
Operations, Portals Operator Certificate, DOC On-Line Training within 1 year. 
C. Valid driver's license in the State of Minnesota.
A. Knowledge of modern law enforcement technology and communication practices and 
procedures. 
B. General knowledge of the practices of modern penology as related to the supervision and 
care of persons under institutionalized restraint. 
C. Ability to enforce institutional rules firmly and fairly. 
D. Ability to detect potential behavior problems of inmates. 
E. Ability to detect the early symptoms of common health problems. 
F. Ability to carry out oral and written directions accurately. 
G. Continuous required online training with the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association and 
PATROL online. 
H. Jailors may be required to assist in transporting inmates to court.  
I.  Manage electronic home monitoring. 
J. Ability to supervise the activities of large groups of inmates. 
K. Ability to prepare records and reports. 
L. Ability to provide credible testimony in court. 
M. Ability to physically defend self or others. 
N. Ability to work rotating and/or extended shifts 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week and be 
available for callout and overtime. 
O. Ability to multi-task with numerous interruptions and prioritize as necessary. 
P. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and interpersonal skills as applied to 
interactions with staff, associates, persons in custody, officials, and the general public.
