The SR400 Express Lanes Project is a transformative $4.6 billion infrastructure initiative led by SR400 Constructors, a 50/50 joint venture between Flatiron Dragados and ACCIONA. Commissioned by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and Georgia State Road Tollway Authority (SRTA), the project will add two 16-mile express lanes from Sandy Springs MARTA Station (Exit 5) to McFarland (Exit 12), enhancing mobility along one of Georgia’s busiest corridors. With a peak workforce of over 500, the project also includes dedicated bus rapid transit stations and key bridge refurbishments. Construction is set to begin in late 2025, with substantial completion anticipated in 2031.

The Project Engineer – Earthworks will support field operations and engineering coordination for excavation, grading, embankments, and subgrade work across one of the SR400 segments. This role supports short-term planning, material movement, survey coordination, quantity tracking, and technical documentation to help crews meet grades and project requirements. The Project Engineer works closely with superintendents, equipment and trucking crews, subcontractors, geotechnical and quality teams, and senior engineers to track production and address field conditions safely.

Job Description

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily:

  • Support field execution of clearing, excavation, mass grading, cut-and-fill, embankment construction, subgrade preparation, soil stabilization, aggregate placement, and roadway earthwork.

  • Coordinate daily earthwork operations with Superintendents, Foremen, survey crews, equipment operators, trucking operations, subcontractors, and geotechnical personnel.

  • Review grading plans, cross sections, profiles, earthwork models, specifications, and geotechnical information to support field construction.

  • Track cut/fill quantities, excavation volumes, embankment placement, unsuitable material, borrow material, waste material, and aggregate quantities.

  • Assist in maintaining the project earthwork balance and coordinate movement of material between excavation, fill, borrow, and disposal locations.

  • Coordinate haul operations, truck requirements, haul routes, loading cycles, equipment spreads, and earthwork production targets.

  • Coordinate survey and GPS/machine-control requirements to ensure crews are working to correct grades, slopes, elevations, and construction limits.

  • Verify subgrade preparation, proof rolling, moisture conditioning, stabilization, compaction, and testing requirements are completed properly.

  • Coordinate with geotechnical and quality personnel regarding unsuitable soils, rock, groundwater, compaction failures, and stabilization requirements.

  • Coordinate earthwork around drainage systems, structures, utilities, retaining walls, roadway traffic, and phased construction.

  • Track crew productivity, equipment utilization, earthwork quantities, and subcontractor performance against production targets.

  • Develop look-ahead plans and maintain RFIs, quantity records, daily production reports, photographs, survey data, and as-built information.

  • Monitor cost, schedule, quality, environmental compliance, and safety performance for assigned earthwork activities.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
