Job Title: Remote Mechanical Design Engineer (100% Work From Home)
Location: Remote from Latin America
Position Type: Full-time
Salary: $3,500 USD/Monthly
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM US Business Hours
Job Overview
Our Client is an established laboratory equipment and scientific engineering supplier specializing in high-performance glass reactor systems, process equipment, and custom laboratory hardware. Serving research institutions, chemical development laboratories, and process facilities, they deliver specialized engineering solutions designed for chemical compatibility, cleanability, and precision performance. Operating as an agile, fast-moving team, they rely on practical mechanical design engineers to transform early product concepts into supplier-ready manufacturing packages.
The Role
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Design, CAD Modeling & Manufacturing Packages
-
Transforms general product descriptions, sketches, photos, or reference products into fully realized, manufacturable 3D CAD models and detailed 2D manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks or Fusion 360.
-
Designs custom reactor support frames, stainless steel stands, mounting brackets, motor supports, condenser mounts, drain valve assemblies, and stirrer configurations.
-
Engineers precision PTFE lids, adapters, plugs, fittings, and custom-machined polymer components tailored for chemical resistance and laboratory environments.
-
Generates polished customer approval drawings and renderings highlighting dimensions, port configurations, and structural assumptions.
-
Prepares complete, supplier-ready production packages—including detailed 2D drawings, STEP files, multi-level Bills of Materials (BOMs), material callouts, finish specs, hardware callouts, and tolerance callouts.
Design Optimization, Standardization & Supplier Interface
-
Establishes and expands a reusable internal CAD component library for standard reactor systems, mounting hardware, and custom fittings.
-
Audits existing undocumented equipment to reverse-engineer and create controlled CAD models and drawing packages.
-
Analyzes designs prior to production to optimize for manufacturability, cost efficiency, assembly ease, structural integrity, and cleanability.
-
Communicates directly with external suppliers and fabricators regarding drawing clarifications, manufacturing tolerances, design revisions, and quality control.
-
Assists in establishing part inspection criteria and refining custom design quoting workflows.
Qualifications, Skills, and Key Competencies
Required Qualifications
-
Geographic Location: Based in Mexico, with a strong preference for candidates located in Tijuana, Baja California, or Northern Mexico (to align with potential future manufacturing operations).
-
Engineering Background: Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics, or equivalent practical design experience.
-
3D CAD & Manufacturing Drawings: Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD modeling (SolidWorks or Fusion 360 preferred) with demonstrated expertise in producing real-world 2D manufacturing drawings (GD&T knowledge preferred).
-
Manufacturing Process Knowledge: Solid understanding of stainless steel fabrication, sheet metal, welded assemblies, plastic machining (PTFE/polymers), and standard mechanical hardware.
-
Design from Ambiguity: Proven ability to ask critical engineering questions and develop practical design options from incomplete or high-level customer requirements.
-
English Communication: Strong written and verbal English skills to collaborate smoothly with business owners, internal teams, and international suppliers.
-
Organization & Documentation: Strict discipline with CAD file management, revision tracking, project documentation, and structured BOM creation.
-
Remote Infrastructure: Fully equipped home workspace featuring high-speed internet, a modern workstation capable of handling complex CAD assemblies, a webcam, and a headset.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience designing laboratory equipment, chemical process reactors, skids, automation equipment, pharmaceutical, or food-grade machinery.
-
Hands-on experience with PTFE/fluoropolymer machining and stainless steel welding/fabrication.
-
Prior experience interacting directly with contract manufacturers or overseas suppliers.
Selection Process & Initial Trial Project
Candidates will participate in a structured evaluation process:
-
Portfolio & Screening Review: Evaluation of past 3D assemblies, 2D manufacturing drawings, BOMs, and actual manufactured part examples.
-
Paid Trial Project: Successful candidates will complete a paid practical trial project (e.g., custom reactor frame design, modular PTFE lid layout, or supplier part redesign package) prior to long-term onboarding.
First 90 Days Success Milestones
-
30 Days: Complete the initial paid trial project, delivering usable CAD models, customer approval drawings, and an organized supplier package.
-
60 Days: Independently manage custom design requests from rough concepts through complete supplier-ready drawing sets and structured BOMs.
-
90 Days: Establish at least one complete custom design package, optimize the custom quoting workflow, and contribute foundational assets to the internal reusable CAD library.
-
Competitive USD Compensation: $3,500 USD monthly salary paid directly in USD.
-
High-Impact Engineering Ownership: Direct responsibility for end-to-end product design, supplier communication, and portfolio development.
-
Potential In-Person / Career Growth: Early opportunity to participate in potential future Mexico-based manufacturing or engineering operations.
-
100% Remote Infrastructure: Flexible, remote-first engagement executed during US business hours.
Your application CANNOT be considered without a voice or video recording. It must be at least 30 seconds long and in English. Submissions in any other language or missing a recording will be automatically disqualified.
Each application includes knockout questions designed to verify the minimum qualifications required by the client.
