Start a Hands-On Career in the Rail Industry
Looking for an opportunity to get your foot in the door of the railroad industry? Road & Rail Services is hiring a Railcar Prep & Inspection Technician in Montgomery, Alabama.
Previous railroad experience is not required. We are looking for dependable people who are comfortable working with their hands, learning new skills, and spending their workday outdoors. Experience in construction, welding, manufacturing, landscaping, warehouse operations, automotive work, general labor, or other physically demanding jobs can transfer well to this position.
This is not an indoor or climate-controlled job. You will work outside around railcars and industrial equipment in changing weather conditions, including Alabama heat, cold, rain, and humidity. If you enjoy active work and want an opportunity to build experience in the rail industry, this could be a strong career starting point.
What You'll Be Doing
You'll work with the team to inspect and prepare railcars before they are placed into service. Responsibilities include:
Inspecting railcars for visible damage, wear, and conditions requiring attention
Cleaning railcars using backpack blowers, scraping tools, and other equipment
Opening, closing, and inspecting railcar end doors
Identifying maintenance or repair needs and reporting them appropriately
Performing approved minor repairs, including stick welding when authorized
Using hand and power tools safely
Keeping tools, equipment, and PPE in good working condition
Maintaining a clean and organized work area
Following company, customer, and railroad safety procedures at all times
What We're Looking For
You do not need a railroad background to apply. We are especially interested in candidates who want to learn the rail industry and build long-term experience.
Candidates should have:
Previous stick-welding experience
Basic experience using hand and power tools
Ability and willingness to perform physical work outdoors
Dependable attendance and punctuality
Ability to follow instructions and established safety procedures
Strong attention to detail
Willingness to learn railcar inspection and preparation procedures
Ability to work safely around moving equipment and an active rail operation
Experience in welding, construction, manufacturing, industrial work, automotive repair, maintenance, warehouse operations, or general labor is a plus.
