Duties & Responsibilities:

  • The Facilities Technician will carry out their tasks in accordance with Viavi Safety Charter; Safe Practices; Procedures and Policies.   The technician will actively contribute to workplace safety by placing the safety of co-workers and self before other priorities.
    • The position requires the use of certain Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses and safety shoes to be worn at all times according to the Viavi Safety policy.
  • The position has the potential for handling hazardous and non-hazardous materials, including exposure to material dust.  The use of dust masks or breathing apparatus and protective clothing requires that the technician is shaven based on OSHA requirements for wearing full or half face respirators or N-95 type masks.
  • The Facilities Technician position consists of a set on-site work schedule, combined with a rotating on-call coverage for after hours, weekends and holidays as required to support Manufacturing that operates 24/7/365.
    • The technician must strictly adhere to the Viavi attendance policy, participating in shift turnover meetings and providing status updates.  This position will occasionally require overtime hours as well as flexible shift hours to complete specific projects.
  • The Facilities Technician is required to monitor the performance and know the operational status of the highly technical equipment and plant support systems within the Facilities area of responsibility to avoid equipment stoppages, slowdowns, or product loss because of equipment malfunction.
    • Daily rounds and inspection are required along with recording and reporting data.
  • The Facilities Technician inspects the performance of the building equipment daily and responds as necessary to any variances.  The Facilities Technician is responsible for the performance and operational status of the equipment within the plant support systems.
    • Plant support systems include but are not limited to HVAC systems, Building Management System, process cooling water system, electrical systems and the fire safety system.
  • The Facilities Technician serves as a resource for Operations, working with equipment maintenance and engineering as required and is responsible for communications with the responsible production personnel.
  • The Facilities Technician will complete tasks as required as directed by the Facilities Lead Technician, supervision, management or through assigned work requests, managing coordination of tasks and completing assigned work orders in a timely manner.
  • Utilizing Federal, State and local regulations for guidance, the Facilities Technician will be responsible for assessing, creating and maintaining hazardous waste storage areas, labeling of all raw material as well as collected hazardous waste materials.
    • Assist in physically moving incoming chemical shipments to designated storage areas and supervise storage activities to properly anticipate floor containment needs for exchanges and customer needs due to production.
  • The Facilities Technician ensures that all spaces within the area of responsibility are kept consistently organized and clean and all materials consumed are reported and items low on stock are communicated.

  • Experience in an understanding of building support systems such as HVAC, Electrical Systems, Pumps and Fluid Dynamics, Chemical Handling, Hazardous Waste Management and Building & Infrastructure, including knowledge of vacuum pumps, plumbing, compressors, water systems, safety systems, motors, controllers, refrigeration, and general construction.
  • Responsible for obtaining annual RCRA, Hazardous Waste and DOT training, participation in applicable training/certification courses and utilizes expertise based on hazmat certifications to provide direction in creation of hazmat shipping documents in an accurate and timely manner.
  • This position requires an ability to work with others, training with more experienced technicians to learn best practices on proprietary equipment systems and expand technical skill set. The technician should have a desire to learn, ask questions and actively participate in ongoing technical training.  The technician must have a coachable attitude with the ability to take direction and constructive criticism from senior team members.
  • When unexpected interruptions or safety incidents occur, the Facilities Technician is responsible for investigating root cause, restoring the equipment, as well as mitigating any future failures.
  • Consistently maintain a safe work area. Tools and instruments are cleaned and put away.  Materials are disposed of correctly.
  • Ability to use computers and common software and the skills to clearly communicate verbally and in writing and to interface with programs such as the Building Management System.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs. regularly and perform physical labor throughout the shift.
  • Upon accepting, must be able to pass pre-employment physical (lifting) test and spirometry breathing test.
