Director of Land Development Engineering

Our client, a prominent nationwide civil engineering consulting firm, is seeking a Director of Land Development Engineering to lead and continue expanding its San Antonio practice.

This is a senior leadership position for an established civil engineer who brings more than technical and project management experience. Our client is looking for someone with a strong following in the San Antonio development community, a proven ability to generate work, and a successful track record serving single-family residential developers and homebuilders.

Experience with commercial, mixed-use, multifamily, or other site development projects is certainly welcome. However, single-family residential land development experience is a must. That is the main course here, not the side dish.

The firm provides land and site development, public works, transportation, planning, landscape architecture, construction management, surveying, and environmental services to public- and private-sector clients nationwide.

The Opportunity

The Director of Land Development Engineering will lead the San Antonio land development practice, oversee its people and projects, strengthen existing client relationships, and drive continued growth throughout the market.

This individual will serve as the face of the practice to key clients while providing strategic, operational, and technical leadership to the department.

Responsibilities will include:

• Leading and expanding the firm’s single-family residential land development practice in the San Antonio market

• Developing and maintaining relationships with residential developers, homebuilders, property owners, municipalities, and other members of the local development community

• Generating new business, identifying upcoming opportunities, and maintaining an appropriate backlog of work

• Serving as the primary point of contact and trusted advisor for key clients

• Overseeing the recruitment, hiring, training, mentorship, and development of personnel ranging from Senior Project Managers to engineers and Civil 3D design staff

• Providing leadership on proposal strategy, scopes of work, fee development, contract negotiations, and project execution

• Working closely with the Managing Director to develop and execute the department’s business plan and San Antonio-specific growth objectives

• Managing and resolving complex matters involving projects, clients, schedules, budgets, and personnel

• Collaborating with the Managing Director on employee compensation adjustments, promotions, succession planning, and staff development

• Maintaining an appropriate balance between backlog, workload, and available staffing

• Communicating with other regional directors to address staffing needs, encourage work sharing, and maintain strong utilization

• Establishing and maintaining relationships with public agencies, industry associations, and professional organizations, preferably through active involvement and leadership positions

• Monitoring key business metrics, including revenue, multiplier, accounts receivable, utilization, unbilled work, project profitability, and backlog

• Participating actively in business development and working with the Managing Director to address gaps in contract execution or future workload

• Attending monthly operations meetings with the Managing Director and Operations Leader

• Collaborating with public- and private-sector departments across the region to promote a unified “One Team” approach, expand client services, and support regional growth

• Establishing a strong culture of quality assurance and quality control

• Maintaining senior-level responsibility for the quality of project deliverables while developing staff members capable of leading QA/QC programs

Requirements

The successful candidate will have:

• A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field

• A valid Professional Engineer registration in the state of Texas

• A minimum of 10 years of professional civil engineering experience, with additional experience preferred

• A strong and demonstrable track record in single-family residential land development engineering

• Established relationships and a strong professional following within the San Antonio residential development and homebuilding community

• A proven ability to develop business, win work, and grow long-term client relationships

• Experience leading teams, managing operations, and developing engineering professionals

• A strong understanding of the San Antonio development, entitlement, permitting, and regulatory environment

• Experience with commercial, mixed-use, multifamily, or other site development projects is beneficial but not required as the candidate’s primary area of expertise

• Strong proficiency with AutoCAD, Excel, and Word

• Excellent written, verbal, presentation, negotiation, and relationship-building skills

• The leadership presence, energy, and entrepreneurial mindset necessary to grow a successful practice
