Job Description:
About the Team:
The software team is part of the Global Manufacturing Engineering (GME). Alongside GME's Hardware Controls, Manufacturing Process, and Automated Quality Control teams, we build the geometrical compiler behind Spark™ Clear Aligners: the math-heavy software stack that turns digital treatment intent into physical parts at production scale. Our systems decide how geometry gets transformed, nested, validated, and translated into instructions that run across a global factory footprint producing more than 100,000 unique parts per day.
This is not generic application development. Our code drives scanners, printers, mills, and other fab equipment. Physical reality is the unit test. When the math is wrong, parts are wrong.
Job Summary:
We are hiring a 3D C++ Software Engineer with a strong foundation in applied mathematics, computational geometry, and software engineering. You will contribute to the design, implementation, testing, and support of software systems that bridge CAD to CAM, including geometry processing, numerical optimization, manufacturing workflows, and production automation.
You should be comfortable working through mathematical and engineering problems, implementing robust solutions in modern C++, and collaborating with senior engineers, R&D teams, and manufacturing stakeholders to validate those solutions on real hardware.
This is a full-time and on-site five days/week engineering role in Pomona, CA. Rapid development here depends on being next to the hardware and the people using it. You will work directly with R&D equipment such as scanners, 3D printers, CNC systems, and metrology tools, shortening the loop between idea, code, experiment, measurement, and revision from weeks to days.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain algorithms for 3D geometry processing, CAD/CAM workflows, spatial reasoning, and numerical computation within a production manufacturing environment.
- Support the implementation of computational models that represent physical processes, machine constraints, and manufacturing requirements.
- Write high-quality C++20 code with attention to correctness, maintainability, performance, and reliability.
- Prototype and evaluate ideas using Python, NumPy, SciPy, and related tools when appropriate.
- Collaborate closely with R&D, Manufacturing Engineering, and Operations teams to test software on production and laboratory equipment.
- Participate in the validation and troubleshooting of software systems by analyzing outputs, identifying root causes, and implementing corrective actions.
- Contribute to services that utilize gRPC, Protobuf, Bazel, Conan, Docker, and cloud-based deployment environments.
- Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and continuous improvement of software engineering practices.
- Any duties or tasks assigned by Manager.
Examples of the Work:
- Implement algorithms that identify unsupported geometry in printable parts and assist in generating support structures that improve manufacturing success rates.
- Develop geometry-processing tools that modify part surfaces, wall thicknesses, and manufacturing features based on engineering requirements.
- Process and analyze point-cloud or scan data to compare manufactured parts against digital models and identify deviations.
- Support optimization of CNC or manufacturing process parameters through mathematical modeling and software automation.
Job Requirements:
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 3+ years of professional software development experience using modern C++.
- Strong foundation in 3D geometry, linear algebra, numerical methods, and algorithm development.
- Experience implementing software solutions involving computational geometry, scientific computing, graphics, robotics, simulation, CAD/CAM, or similar technical domains.
- Ability to translate mathematical concepts into reliable software implementations.
- Experience working in collaborative engineering environments and contributing to production-quality software systems.
- Willingness and ability to work on site in Pomona and spend regular time with R&D equipment to drive rapid iteration.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with libraries such as CGAL, Eigen, Embree, VTK, or Draco.
- Familiarity with point-cloud processing, registration techniques, or 3D scanning workflows.
- Experience using modern C++20 development practices and design patterns.
- Experience using Python for numerical analysis, algorithm prototyping, or automation.
- Familiarity with gRPC, Protobuf, Bazel, Conan, Docker, Helm, or AWS Kubernetes environments.
- Exposure to manufacturing, laboratory, or industrial equipment such as CNC machines, 3D printers, scanners, vision systems, or metrology tools.
- Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, or ClickHouse.
Abilities:
- Good organizational, planning, and prioritization skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to follow established engineering processes, standards, and guidelines.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks while seeking guidance appropriately on complex or ambiguous problems.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to software, manufacturing, R&D, and operations teams.
- Ability to learn new technologies, tools, and manufacturing processes quickly.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within cross-functional teams.
- Ability to prioritize work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment where quality and reliability are critical.
- Ability to follow applicable safety, quality, regulatory, and compliance procedures when working near R&D or manufacturing equipment.
- Ability to travel up to 10% of the time to support manufacturing sites, both domestically and internationally.
