JOB DESCRIPTION:

Position Summary

The RN Inpatient Supervisor provides shift-based clinical and operational leadership for hospital units within a Florida behavioral health hospital and addiction treatment center. This position is not a direct supervisor of staff; however, it serves as the designated shift leader responsible for coordinating patient flow, maintaining appropriate staffing levels, supporting safe nursing practice, and ensuring urgent and emergent needs are addressed promptly and appropriately for patients receiving inpatient psychiatric, crisis stabilization, detoxification, and substance use disorder treatment services.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide designated shift leadership for assigned inpatient hospital units, including psychiatric, crisis stabilization, detoxification, and addiction recovery services.
  • Coordinate daily shift operations by assessing patient acuity, census, admissions, discharges, transfers, staffing assignments, and immediate unit needs.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing levels during the assigned shift by adjusting assignments, identifying coverage needs, escalating staffing concerns, and collaborating with nursing leadership or on-call leadership as needed.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for RNs, LPNs, Behavioral Health Technicians, and interdisciplinary team members during the assigned shift without functioning as the direct supervisor or manager of record.
  • Respond promptly to urgent and emergent patient care needs, including psychiatric escalation, medical changes, withdrawal complications, safety events, medication concerns, accidents, injuries, and other high-risk situations.
  • Ensure appropriate escalation, notification, and documentation of significant clinical, operational, safety, staffing, or regulatory concerns in accordance with hospital policy and Florida requirements.
  • Support timely nursing assessment, medication administration, withdrawal monitoring, vital sign review, safety checks, infection prevention practices, and response to changes in patient condition.
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing leadership, admissions staff, and interdisciplinary treatment teams to support safe patient flow and continuity of care.
  • Promote a safe, therapeutic, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented environment that supports de-escalation, patient dignity, suicide risk mitigation, substance withdrawal safety, and behavioral health stabilization.
  • Participate in shift huddles, communication handoffs, incident follow-up, safety rounds, and operational updates to promote accountability, teamwork, and consistent practice across units and shifts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the RN Inpatient Nurse Manager, Director of Nursing, Hospital Administrator, Program Director, or other designated leadership.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of inpatient behavioral health, psychiatric stabilization, detoxification, addiction recovery, crisis response, and trauma-informed nursing practices.
  • Ability to assess patient acuity, prioritize competing needs, coordinate staffing resources, and escalate concerns appropriately during assigned shifts.
  • Skilled in communicating clearly and professionally with nursing staff, behavioral health support staff, providers, patients, families, and leadership during routine operations and high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to support team members through real-time guidance, coaching, problem-solving, and role clarification while deferring formal performance management to designated supervisory leadership.

Experience and Education Qualifications:

  • Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Florida, or eligibility to obtain Florida RN licensure prior to employment.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional nursing experience required, with experience in inpatient behavioral health, psychiatric, crisis stabilization, detoxification, substance use disorder treatment, or addiction recovery services strongly preferred.
  • Prior charge nurse, shift lead, or comparable clinical leadership experience preferred.

This position provides shift-based leadership and clinical coordination but does not serve as the direct supervisor or manager of record for assigned staff. Applicant must maintain active Florida RN licensure and meet all organizational, regulatory, and continuing education requirements applicable to inpatient behavioral health and addiction treatment services.

Supervisory Requirements:

This position does not have direct supervisory authority for hiring, corrective action, performance evaluations, disciplinary decisions, or employment status changes. The role provides shift-based clinical leadership, operational coordination, staffing support, and real-time guidance to promote safe and effective patient care.

Employment Requirements:

Successful completion of background screening, fingerprinting, new hire orientation, required competencies, annual education, crisis prevention training, licensure verification, and other training requirements in accordance with Florida requirements, accreditation standards, and organizational policy.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

Work is performed in an office, clinical, residential, and/or community-based environment depending on role and assignment. The position may involve routine use of office, clinical, or electronic systems and equipment. Duties may require prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, and working at a computer. Work hours may include evenings, weekends, holidays, or extended shifts based on program needs. This position is classified as sedentary work. Sedentary work involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
