 Indian River Hospital’s Primary Care team, including family medicine and internal medicine caregivers, are skilled in preventing, diagnosing and treating pediatric and adult diseases and conditions. No matter how common or complex a condition is, this team works in collaboration with other specialists to coordinate and manage patient care. As a Lead Medical Assistant on the Primary Care team, you will perform secretarial and administrative support activities for the office under the direct supervision of a licensed physician, functioning as a liaison inter and intra-departmentally. All your work helps ensure the best possible health outcomes. Additionally, you will receive ample opportunities to enhance your skills, gain hands-on experience and explore advanced positions at Cleveland Clinic. 

A caregiver in this position works days from 7:30AM – 5:00PM. 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:   

  • Implement patient care by continuously practicing within the guidelines of CCF policies and procedures 

  • Perform accuracy in medication administration as directed by physician. 

  • Demonstrate accurate and descriptive clinical documentation, as evidenced by documentation review by Manager. 

  • Demonstrate knowledge of medical records, authorization forms, laboratory requisitions, disease process and therapeutics. 

  • Recognize changes in patient status and report pertinent information to Charge Nurse and/or Physician. 

  • Obtain and document patient's weight, vital signs and initial information for providers. 

  • Obtain miscellaneous specimens and prepare them for laboratory testing. 

  • Take messages for prescription refills, phone pharmacy with prescription refills and record prescription in file, under the direction of the physician. 

  • Follow the clinic Code Blue and Medical Alert protocols. 

  • Understand and reconcile day sheet with charge tickets. 

  • Take and relay messages. 

  • Ensure appointments are scheduled properly (e.g., input reasons for all visits on all appointments correctly, obtain correct information such as PCP, referring physician). 

  • Verify and update patient demographics and insurance information and identify whether the patient needs referral and/or authorization and obtain referral and/or authorization when necessary according to policy. 

  • Produce error-free correspondence (e.g., letters, telephone messages and meeting minutes). 

  • Assist with calendar, meeting, and travel arrangements as requested and ensure proper forms are completed. 

  • Ensure all patients are rescheduled relating to physician out days in a timely manner. 

  • Ensure surgery packets are completed correctly and delivered in a timely manner to OPS and Authorization Department as necessary. 

  • Comply with all Joint Commission and HIPAA requirements. 

 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:   

  • Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant program 

  • Military training as a hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) will be considered  

  • Three to five years of clinical experience 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross 

  • Knowledge of age-related concerns as observed through appropriate nursing interventions by the Physician or Manager and documentation 

  • Knowledge of Infection Control Practices 

  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills  

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:   

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMT) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) 

Physical Requirements:

  • Essential Duties: This position requires knowledge of various aspects of patient care.
  • Must possess good organizational skills to balance clerical and clinical duties.
  • Work is heavy, constant lifting and moving patients, carrying equipment, supplies and material up to 50 pounds without help and over 50 pounds with the help of mechanical devices or other personnel.
  • Stooping, pushing, and pulling when moving patient or equipment into position for treatment as well as reaching for, handling, feeling and manipulation of equipment in position.
  • Physical Duties: This position requires frequent walking, sitting, and standing as well as frequent talking and listening when giving instructions and explanations.
  • Frequent use of the phone, fax machines, and occasional to frequent use of the computer.
  • Working Conditions: The majority of time the employee spends indoors in air-conditioned areas.
  • Potential for exposure to blood and blood borne pathogens is significant.
  • Clinical exposure to patients requires the use of personal protective equipment.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • This position requires high exposure to infectious wastes such as blood and bodily fluids that mandates the wearing of gloves, masks, gowns, and goggles as appropriate.
