The purpose of this classification is to perform supervisory/manual work functions associated with construction, repair, maintenance, landscaping, and groundskeeping of city streets/roads, drainage systems, parks, and recreation facilities.

  • Employees that hold a Class A CDL will receive a $1.00 per hour pay differential. 
  • Employees that hold a Class B CDL will receive a $0.85 per hour pay differential.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Provides direction, guidance and assistance to employees; assigns and evaluates work; processes employee concerns and problems; provides training as needed.
  • Organizes and prioritizes projects; assigns work, monitors status of work in progress, and inspects completed work.
  • Ensures adherence to established safety procedures; inspects and monitors property, facilities, and equipment maintain safety; utilizes precautionary safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
  • Supervises and monitors a work crew assigned to city projects and functions as assigned, which may include construction/maintenance of city streets/roads, drainage systems, right-of-way areas, parks, recreation facilities, grounds areas, or other areas of assignment.
  • Maintains City property and public areas to keep them safe and free of low hanging limbs, fallen trees, overgrown landscapes, etc.
  • Makes recommendations for long-term and short-term department goals, projects and activities.
  • Maintains inventory of department equipment, tools, supplies and materials; coordinates availability of equipment, materials, tools and supplies needed for projects; initiates requests for new or replacement materials.
  • Supervises and performs manual tasks associated with landscaping, groundskeeping, and maintenance of city parks/recreation facilities.
  • Responds to emergency calls during hurricanes, inclement weather, or other emergency situations.
  • Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in department projects and activities.
  • Supervises the transport, loading and unloading of various materials and equipment used in projects; assists in setting up special events/activities, including traffic control and litter pickup.
  • Supervises and performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition.
  • Prepares or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, maintenance reports, performance evaluations, accident reports, and other documents.
  • Receives various forms, reports, logs, time sheets, maintenance reports, work orders, purchase orders, schedules, architectural drawings, electrical diagrams, maps, chemical data sheets, catalogs, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
  • Responds to complaints and questions related to department operations; provides information, researches problems, and initiates problem resolution.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, contractors, vendors/suppliers, sales representatives, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic properties.
  • Skill in operating and controlling the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments.
  • Ability to ability to calculate and/or tabulate data. Includes performing subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations.
  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.
  • Ability to calculate decimals and percentages; ability to utilize principles of fractions; ability to interpret graphs.
  • Ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership, and to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to resolve problems.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by two (2) years previous experience and/or training in the area of landscaping/groundskeeping, or other related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.  
Licenses or Certifications:
Valid State of Alabama driver’s license; may require valid Alabama Commercial Driver’s License; valid State of Alabama commercial/custodial applicators license preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is moderate work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force. Work requires regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals.  Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in an outdoor environment. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.
