Job Summary
The Certified CDL Trainer trains, mentors, and evaluates CDL drivers to ensure safe, efficient operations and compliance with DOT, FMCSA, and company standards. This role supports driver onboarding, ongoing development, and a strong culture of safety and operational excellence.
Hours and Wages
- Monday-Friday 8:00AM-5:00PM
- Starting wage: $26.00-$30.00 per hour, based on experience
- Flexible scheduling, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, or overnight travel depending on business needs
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct classroom, hands-on, and behind-the-wheel training for new and existing CDL drivers in a transportation and package delivery environment
- Train drivers on DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and company safety policies and procedures
- Conduct ride-a longs, road evaluations, and driver assessments to ensure safe and compliant driving practices
- Provide coaching and corrective training related to accidents, safety incidents, Hours of Service compliance, backing procedures, defensive driving, and vehicle inspections
- Assist with onboarding and orientation of newly hired drivers, including reviewing company expectations, equipment operation, and delivery procedures
- Monitor driver performance metrics and identify opportunities for improvement, retraining, or additional development
- Maintain accurate training records, certifications, evaluations, and compliance documentation
- Support Safety and Operations teams with accident investigations, driver retraining, and corrective action plans
- Ensure drivers understand and comply with ELD usage, pre-trip and post-trip inspections, cargo securement, and company operational standards
- Respond to driver questions regarding safety procedures, delivery processes, equipment operation, and transportation regulations
- Promote a positive safety culture throughout the organization
- Assist with DOT audits, compliance reviews, and internal safety initiatives
- Stay current on transportation industry regulations, and training requirements
- Travel between terminals, facilities, or delivery locations as needed to conduct training and evaluations
Skills and Abilities
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills
- Strong organizational and documentation abilities
- Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, ELD systems, and transportation management software preferred
Education and Experience
- At least 18 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Minimum of 2-5 years of commercial driving experience within transportation, freight, or package delivery operations required
- Valid CDL Class A license with acceptable driving record required
- Certified CDL Trainer certification preferred or ability to obtain certification
- Successfully complete and maintain JJ Keller Driver Trainer certification and all required safety, DOT, and FMCSA compliance training
- Strong knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and transportation safety regulations
- Previous experience training, mentoring, or coaching drivers preferred
Physical Requirements
- Ability to pass a DOT physical exam
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, climb, and enter/exit commercial vehicles frequently
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally
- Ability to travel locally or regionally for driver training, evaluations, and operational support
- Ability to work in varying weather and driving conditions
- Ability to work with all types to freight which include, but are not limited to hazardous material, perishable food and alcohol, firearms, ammunition, and live animals
