Structural Steel Estimator – Construction

A top multi-trade infrastructure contractor in the Newmarket area is looking to add a detail-oriented Estimator for Structural Steel and Miscellaneous Metals.

Reporting to the Division Manager, you will play a key role in securing new business by preparing accurate, competitive estimates and proposals for structural steel and miscellaneous metals projects. This role is responsible for reviewing drawings and specifications, calculating material and labour take-offs, communicating directly with clients, and collaborating closely with project managers to ensure a seamless transition from awarded tenders to project kickoff. The ability to estimate and close jobs independently is required.

Qualifications:

- Degree or Diploma in mechanical or civil engineering, architecture, construction management, or related field

- 5+ yrs experience as an estimator in the Miscellaneous Metals or Structural Steel field.

-Experience in connection details, weld symbols

-Ability to read and interpret structural drawings.

-Knowledge of miscellaneous and custom metals.

-Ability to go to sites, measure and gather details as needed.

- Exceptional time management, multitasking, problem solving and communication skills.

- Ability to closely collaborate with other project teams and stakeholders.

- Ability to negotiate pricing and build strong working relationships with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors.

- Ability to close jobs independently is required.

Responsibilities:

- Assembling Tender Documents

- Researching construction documents and analyzing specifications.

- Studying documentation, meeting with clients, and occasionally inspecting the construction site to fully understand what work is required.

- Taking off materials, consumables, equipment and labour for construction projects.

- Obtaining subcontractor quotes for some projects then determining suitable packages.

- Negotiating with service providers to secure better prices.

- Outlining the work plan to gauge how much time will be needed to complete each development.

- Performing risk assessments to account for potential deviations from the project plan.

- Adjusting profit margin to suit project, client and economic climate conditions.

- Drafting proposals that detail envisaged materials, costs, and time frames.

- Meeting with clients to discuss their thoughts and concerns about our offers.

- Ensuring that relevant documents and proposals are submitted before a bid deadline.

- Regularly reporting to Management on the project Tender status.

- Staying current on the latest estimating technology and industry-related techniques.

- Collaborating with other teams, for assistance and advice on Labour related take-offs
