JOB SUMMARY:Reporting directly to the Director, Risk Management, with a functional reporting relationship to the Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) Regional Director, Risk Management, the Risk Manager is responsible for providing leadership in the management of clinical operational risk, both on a proactive basis with supporting organizational leadership, as well as with managing critical incident, high risk events and reviews for the organization. The Risk Manager is responsible for leading, and implementing departmental and organizational policies, procedures and practices which improve patient care and employee safety. Works directly with external legal counsel on claims, as well as with insurers on potential claims on behalf of the health authority.This work is framed within VCH’s commitments to our pillars of Indigenous Cultural Safety, Anti-Racism, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and Planetary Health.QUALIFICATIONS:Qualifications:Master’s Degree in a Clinical Health Care field, Health Care Administration, Juris Doctor Degree or related discipline, plus five (5) to seven (7) years’ recent, related experience in progressive leadership roles with responsibility for leading organizational risk and critical incident management, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.Registration with the applicable College/Society/professional association as required for the profession, preferred.ROLE SPECIFIC EXPERTISE:• Demonstrated ability to effectively and proactively coordinate strategies, systems, and processes to minimize risk to the organization through management of claims, providing risk advice and collaborating with others to proactively manage risk, and improve the quality and safety for VCH.• Demonstrated technical and analytical expertise to assess and support risk and situation management activities, and to establish and implement risk management and quality improvement strategies to support the organization.• Oversees, assists with, and/or conducts timely risk assessments in response to requests and consults with the appropriate leader concerning risk issues to support effective and timely remediation.• Demonstrated ability to apply superior judgment and political expertise to communicate sensitive information, and effectively persuade and negotiate with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.• Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners to promote and enhance services provided with sensitivity to diversity and indigenous lens.• Practices the recognition, inclusion and support of all types and aspects of diversity at all stages of engagement, with an understanding of the issues faced by people from equity-deserving groups.• Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.SHARED VALUES:You care for everyone:• You’re compassionate, empathetic, and sensitive to the needs of others.• You are respectful, treating people as equals, and valuing others’ perspectives and differences.• You are appreciative of others’ efforts and give them praise when it’s due.You are always learning:• You are open minded, always receptive to different perspectives and ways of doing things.• You are curious and ask questions to find a deeper understanding.• You share your expertise and mentor others by sharing your knowledge and experience.You strive for better results:• You are accountable, and take responsibility for what you say, what you do, and who you engage in achieving better results.• You’re a solution finder, empowered to solve the challenges we face in healthcare.• You take ownership for growth and development and personal development, always seek feedback and opportunities to improve how we do things.
