Fire Inspector (Seasonal)

The Fire Inspector is a non-safety, non-exempt who will work under the general supervision of the Fire Marshal. The Fire Inspector position is a limited term seasonal position that is contingent on needs of the Fire Department and Annual Brush Clearance Program. This position is limited to 20 hours per week following the City of La Habra Heights staff work hours of 7:30 AM-6:00 PM (days to be determined).

The Fire Inspector classification performs the full range of brush clearance inspections in the Community Risk Reduction Division of the Fire Department. The Fire Inspector is responsible for brush clearance compliance inspections, notice writing, and working with property owners to gain compliance.

The Seasonal Fire Inspector position is a limited term of 520 hours maximum.

Due to budgetary constraints, operational budgets do not include funding of CalPERS employer contributions for seasonal positions. Therefore, a qualified candidate who is a member of CalPERS (from current or past employment) will be restricted from seasonal employment.The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. • Inspect properties that are improved and un-improved parcels for compliance with applicable federal, state, and local fire codes and regulations in regard to weed abatement and brush clearance.
• Assist the Fire Marshal with administration tasks including sending correspondence to residents for continued non-compliance of fire codes and regulation in regard to weed abatement and brush clearance.
• Assist in the pursuance of legal remedies for continued instances of non-compliance after notices have been sent out, research, prepare and issue fire notices and correction letters that outline compliance issues and deficiencies.
• Receive, document, and investigate complaints that may involve immediate resolution.
• Prepare and maintain accurate records.
• Understand and follow verbal and written direction from chain of command and maintain cooperative working conditions.
• Attend continuous education classes, seminars, and meetings to remain current on codes, regulations, policies, and procedures
• Participate in special projects related to fire prevention activities and public education events. Assist in other areas of fire prevention and operations as required by fire management
• Conduct fire inspection activities in a professional manner and take steps to diffuse situations as deemed appropriate. Communicate effectively, verbally, and in writing; interact with residents, customers, staff, and other officials with tact and diplomacy.

Knowledge of:

• Safety codes related to fire prevention but not limited to California Fire Code, California Building Code, and National Fire Code.
• Standard fire protection and prevention theory, techniques, and practices relative to various types of occupancies.
• Firefighting methods and equipment.
• Principles of combustion.
• Building material and construction practices.

Ability To:

• Learn, interpret, explain and enforce appropriate fire and City codes and ordinances.
• Knowledge of the practices, procedures, and methods used in fire prevention.
• Knowledge of the principles and techniques of building inspection.
• Analyze and compile technical information on code investigations and violations.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
• Maintain records and prepare comprehensive reports; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Education / Training / Experience:

Required:

• Sufficient fire prevention experience to demonstrate possession of knowledge and abilities listed in this job announcement AND;
• High School diploma or equivalent AND;
• Completion of 15 semester college units in fire or building technology related coursework OR successful completion of California State Fire Marshal courses: Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, and Haz-Mat First Responder Awareness courses.
• Licenses / Certificates / Special Requirements:

Required:

• Valid, unrestricted California Class “C” Driver’s License or higher.
  
  

Highly Desired: CSFM Fire Inspector 2A – 2D Certification, CPR, First Aid, or EMT Certification.

Environment

Will be required to work in an office and all types of field environments, may be exposed to inclement weather conditions; come in contact with hazardous materials/waste including odors and fumes; ability to tolerate very hot and cold temperatures and walking over rough, uneven, and rocky terrain in rural areas of the city. Office duties are performed at a desk or computer terminal subject to noise from office equipment operations; frequent interruptions; and contact in person and on the telephone with a variety of City staff and others.

Physical

Walk or stand for extended periods of time with no rest; walk over rough terrain; bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time; climb hills, stairs and ladders, working at heights above 12 feet; lift objects weighing up to 100 pounds when conducting fire inspections using proper lifting techniques.

See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing

Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
