The selected candidate will have the opportunity to:
- Install, operate, troubleshoot, maintain, repair, or replace traffic controllers, vehicle detectors, Internet protocol (IP) cameras, variable message signs (VMS), and fiber optic cabling in the field and the shop.
- Use Geographic Information System (GIS) and other software to research, file, and produce maps for visual reference; record maps and plans and maintain databases.
- Perform and/or coordinate with maintenance staff to perform maintenance, repair, and modify traffic signals, flashing beacons, and appurtenances. Modification to traffic signals is limited to those that do not require engineering re-design.
- Administer contracts for the maintenance of traffic signals.
- Program Signal Controllers.
- Investigate complaints regarding signal operations.
- Diagnose and repair traffic signals and appurtenances.
- Provide 24-hour emergency response for signal callouts.
- Modify traffic signals to improve operation and safety where engineering re-design is not required.
- Operate Personnel Hoist Vehicle for signal maintenance operations.
- Coordinate, purchase, and testing of signal hardware for signal projects.
- Maintain records for traffic signals.

Education and Experience
Traffic Signal and Lighting Technician Trainee:
Equivalent to graduation from high school
AND
One (1) year of manual labor experience.
One (1) year of experience equivalent as a Traffic Signal and Lighting Technician Trainee
OR
Two (2) years of experience in maintaining and repairing roadways, electronics, or traffic control systems
OR
Equivalent to an associate degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in pre-engineering, electronics, electrical technology, or a closely related field
OR
Possession of an IMSA certification in Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Technician
Traffic Signal and Lighting Technician II:
Three (3) years of journey-level experience in the installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals, lighting control equipment, or other industrial/commercial electrical systems.
OR
Possession of a valid California certificate as an Engineer-in-Training
Other Requirements
Licenses and Certifications for II level:
- Possession of the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Technician II certification.
Licenses and Certifications for all levels:
- Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California or Nevada Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record.
