Job Scope

High level purpose of function.

The primary purpose of this role is to develop, characterize, and sustain the complex processes for wet electrode - slurry mixing (anode and cathode) and subsequent precision coating. This key role defines the process and parameters to control the chemical, physical, and rheological properties and performance of the slurry and coating processes. This role is responsible to ensure the process meets the critical specifications for battery cell performance, manufacturability, reliability, and cost.

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include (but are not limited to)

  • Slurry Process Optimization: Define, monitor, and control mixing parameters (e.g., shear rate, batch, time, temperature), to achieve target rheology, viscosity, and solid content while minimizing particle agglomeration.
  • Coating Process Control: Characterize and tune coating parameters (e.g., die gap, web speed, tension, drying profile) to ensure consistent active material loading, thickness uniformity (TIS), electrode density, and adhesion.
  • Process Characterization & DOE: Lead Design of Experiments (DOE) and statistical analysis campaigns to establish robust process windows and qualification limits for new material formulations and equipment.
  • Quality & Troubleshooting: Act as the subject matter expert (SME) for coating defects (streaks, pinholes, edge beads, dark spots, mura). Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and implement long-term Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA).
  • Equipment & Automation: Define technical specifications for, and participate in the FAT/SAT (Factory/Site Acceptance Testing) and commissioning of new mixers, pumps, coaters, and in-line metrology equipment.
  • Operations Support: Be an active participant in continuous improvement and Gemba walks. Be active on the shop floor to support trials, improvements, and training. Share your knowledge with the team to make increase the competence of the team.

  • Manager work environment responsibility: No
  • All employees are accountable for complying with safety regulations and actively supporting a safe workplace.
  • Decision Authority: Authorized to define, approve, and implement process parameter 'recipes' (setpoints and ranges) within the mixing and coating systems. Can initiate a temporary Process Hold or Material Stop/Use when slurry or coated material quality violates specification limits.

Requirements

Educational background and previous experience required for the role.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Science, or a related field. A master’s degree is a plus.

Experience:

5+ years of hands-on experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment, with specific experience in slurry preparation/rheology and precision slot-die electrode coating.

Technical Skills:

Deep knowledge of rheological principles and characterization techniques (viscometry, oscillation/amplitude sweeps). Proficiency with Statistical Process Control (SPC), Minitab/JMP software, and Six Sigma methodologies.

Specific Knowledge

Working knowledge of Lithium-ion battery electrochemistry and the impact of electrode microstructure on cell performance. Experience with dry room/low humidity manufacturing protocols.
