Overview
We are looking for a Senior DevOps / Platform Engineer to join our engineering team and take ownership of cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, automation, and developer experience.
The role requires strong hands-on expertise across Kubernetes, GCP, Terraform, CI/CD, Python, networking, security, and Internal Developer Platforms, along with the ability to mentor junior engineers and collaborate effectively across teams.
The ideal candidate is proactive, ownership-driven, technically strong, and comfortable working independently while also serving as a go-to technical resource for the wider engineering team.
Responsibilities
- Strong hands-on experience with container orchestration, particularly Kubernetes and GKE.
- Thorough knowledge of GCP, including:
- GKE
- Cloud SQL
- Networking / VPC
- IAM and cloud security fundamentals
- Working familiarity with AWS and common cloud infrastructure services.
- Demonstrable experience designing, implementing, and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, with GitHub Actions preferred. Bamboo experience is a plus.
- Proficient in Terraform, including:
- Infrastructure-as-code standards and best practices
- Writing and maintaining reusable modules
- Managing infrastructure at scale
- Proficient in Python, with the ability to write and maintain scripts, automation, and internal tooling.
- Strong understanding of networking and security fundamentals.
- Working knowledge of database administration and database infrastructure basics.
- Familiarity with Internal Developer Platforms (IDPs) and platform engineering concepts, particularly Backstage.
- Willingness to support and contribute to the evolution of the IDP, including:
- Enriching and maintaining the Backstage entity catalog
- Developing and maintaining custom Backstage plugins
- Building self-service workflows for:
- Temporary database access requests
- User onboarding into systems
- Jira onboarding/provisioning
- Slack onboarding/provisioning
- Other common developer and infrastructure requests
- Confident working with TypeScript and frontend technologies, with a willingness to contribute to IDP frontend maintenance and improvements.
- Experience with Crossplane and willingness to enhance and expand its use as part of the organization's platform engineering framework.
Required Skills
Nice-to-Haves
- Familiarity with service scorecards and engineering maturity models.
- Experience with GitOps tooling such as:
- Argo CD
- Flux
Other Technical Skills
- Strong experience with or good depth in observability platforms, particularly Datadog.
- Experience building internal tooling and automation to reduce engineering toil and improve developer productivity.
- Exposure to compliance-adjacent infrastructure and processes, including SOC 2, GDPR, or similar frameworks.
Mentoring & Leadership
- Experience creating onboarding materials, runbooks, technical documentation, or training content.
- Ability to shape and break down project work around the strengths and development areas of junior engineers.
- Comfortable acting as an informal technical go-to and escalation point outside formal reporting structures.
- Some experience leading or coordinating small cross-team technical initiatives.
- Willingness to share knowledge, mentor team members, and contribute to building a strong engineering culture.
Soft Skills
- Confident written and verbal communicator who proactively identifies and flags blockers.
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on documenting processes, procedures, and solutions so they can be easily followed by others.
- Able to effectively manage personal priorities and workload, while escalating appropriately when support or clarification is required.
- Takes end-to-end ownership of assigned tasks and drives them through to resolution.
- Comfortable coordinating with other teams when required to resolve issues or complete deliverables.
- Responsive to requests from other teams; able to either action requests directly or appropriately triage them to the right team member.
- Proactive in identifying when a junior engineer is blocked and stepping in before it becomes a larger dependency or delivery issue.
- Comfortable providing informal coaching and technical guidance to other engineers.
- Able to adjust the level and style of technical communication for different audiences.
