Description
Summary: Under moderate supervision, participate as a member of a work crew to install, tap, repair and relocate water and sewer lines; monitor water pressure to ensure proper water flow to customers; perform related responsibilities as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics: Receives supervision from the Division Supervisor and receives functional direction from the Certified Water Distribution Operator Lead or Operator/Sewer II.

- Taps, installs, replaces, and relocates water and sewer main lines and water and sewer laterals.
- Repairs water and sewer line breaks.
- Repairs, replaces, and installs new fire hydrants and connect waterlines.
- Replaces water meters as required.
- Repairs or replaces concrete sections for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, storm drains, ramps, and driveways.
- Installs water lines for temporary water services.
- Uses power equipment and hand tools such as jackhammers, power saws, pipe wrenches, ratchets, crescent wrenches channel locks, concrete saw, generator, hydraulic ratchet, cutters, tampers, water pumps, tapping machine, and impact tools to perform maintenance tasks.
- Responds to basic customer questions or inquiries regarding sewer maintenance services.
- Performs emergency maintenance work and assists other water and field maintenance crews as assigned.
- Assists with asphalt repairs as directed.
Education/Experience/Training:
REQUIRED:
- Education equivalent to High School graduation.
- Twelve months of experience involving public works, sewer or water maintenance or field operations.
- The City will follow any vaccine and testing regulations imposed by state and/or federal government.
- Ability to obtain State of California Distribution Operator Certificate Grade D-1 within 6-months of employment as probation condition.
- Possession of valid Class C California Driver License with mandatory possession of valid Class B California Driver License with tank endorsement within 6-months of employment as a probation condition. Must maintain driver license and an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to work in traffic, inside excavated holes, and intense heat given seasonal conditions.
- Ability to work at night or on weekends to perform emergency maintenance assignments as needed. Advanced training in hazardous spills.
- Ability to be on stand-by, 24 hours per day for a one to two-week period a month as needed.
- Plumbing and construction mechanics, methods and procedures related to the installation, repair, and maintenance of water and sewer lines.
- Proper and efficient use of hand and power tools and construction equipment.
- Work safety rules and procedures; water pressure testing methods.

- The employee is required to listen to noises and sounds emitted by operating equipment.
- The employee is frequently required to drive City vehicles that have either an automatic and standard transmission.
- The employee is frequently required to stand on concrete, asphalt and soft soil surfaces.
- The employee is occasionally required to use a ladder and must maintain balance during this activity.
- The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl to perform duties.
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 90 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
