The Position
The City of Maple Grove is seeking a dependable and hardworking Light Equipment Operator to join our Public Works team. In this hands-on role, you will operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment to help maintain city streets, roads, and other public infrastructure. Hiring Rate: $31.555/hourly, $65,634.40/annually
*The hiring salary for this position is $65,634.40. You will be eligible to receive any cost of living and annual step increase as laid out in the union contract until you reach the maximum salary of $87,763.52.
This position will require the successful completion of a background/driving history check, CDL clearing house (for current CDL holders), and a drug/medical screening.

- Raise, lower, rebuild, install, replace, and maintain manhole casings, storm sewer catch basins, and field drains, and perform related flood control activities.
- Prepare surfaces, perform crack sealing and minor asphalt patching, and maintain streets, parking lots, curbs, sidewalks, and parking ramps using light equipment.
- Plow sidewalks, streets, parking lots, and parking ramps and apply sand and salt using motorized vehicles and light equipment.
- Install and repair traffic signs and barricades, lay out and apply pavement markings using paint, machinery, and stencils, and flags/directs traffic as needed.
- Clear and grubs sites, prepare ground for seed, sod, and plantings, and remove and dispose of diseased or dead trees, shrubs, plants, and related debris, and perform irrigation activities and related landscape maintenance.
- Load, unload, and haul materials; perform routine driver-type vehicle maintenance; and operate and maintain light equipment.
- Maintain the cleanliness, appearance, and overall condition of city and public properties, including streets, sidewalks, parking areas, and public spaces.
Knowledge of:
- Practices, procedures, equipment and materials used in public works maintenance and construction.
- Safe operation of motorized equipment.
- Operation of light construction and maintenance equipment.
Ability to:
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Successfully pass a pre-employment physical exam.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.
Need to have:
- High school diploma, or equivalent.
- One year experience operating trucks and other light equipment.
- Minnesota Driver's License is required and must have or obtain a Minnesota Commercial Driver's License (CDL) permit within 60 days from hire date, and the MN CDL - Class A license must be obtained within 12 months from date of hire.
Nice to have:
- Additional training or course work in intermediate or heavy maintenance operation
- Previous street maintenance experience in a local municipality
- Valid CDL Class A license
- Previous experience with irrigation
- Experience with light equipment machinery and tools
Environmental Conditions:
Field environment; exposure to inclement weather conditions; work around equipment; work in confined spaces and working long hours when needed.
Physical Conditions:
Physical ability necessary to bend, stoop, twist, turn, kneel, lift and stand for prolonged periods of time, and work in confined spaces.
