Staff Accountant – Insurance Agency

Our client, a growing insurance organization, is seeking a Staff Accountant to join its accounting team. This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional with 3–5 years of experience who enjoys a hands-on role and wants to build on their experience within the insurance industry. The Staff Accountant will support the day-to-day accounting operations of the organization, with responsibility across accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, general ledger activity, agency bill accounting, and insurance commission processing. The ideal candidate has Applied Epic and insurance experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage the full accounts payable process, including invoice processing and vendor payments

• Oversee accounts receivable, including invoicing, collections, and customer account reconciliations

• Process and accurately record client payments and insurance carrier commission payments

• Reconcile daily bank activity and investigate discrepancies

• Prepare, review, and post journal entries

• Perform monthly and year-end general ledger reconciliations

• Assist with month-end and year-end close activities

• Process and reconcile agency bill transactions

• Reconcile direct bill commission statements and research discrepancies

• Partner with insurance carriers and internal teams to resolve billing, commission, and accounting issues

• Utilize Applied Epic, Ascend, or other agency management/accounting systems as applicable

• Research and resolve accounting discrepancies while identifying opportunities to improve processes and controls

• Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation

• Assist with audits, financial reporting, and special accounting projects

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of bookkeeping and/or accounting experience

• Insurance agency accounting experience strongly preferred

• Experience with AP, AR, bank reconciliations, journal entries, and general ledger reconciliations

• Knowledge of agency bill accounting, direct bill commissions, and/or insurance accounting highly desirable

• Experience with Applied Epic, Ascend, or a similar agency management system preferred

• Strong understanding of GAAP

• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software

• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred
