Patient Escort I - Full Time - 3:00pm - 11:30pm Shift - Every Other Weekend and Holiday - Union Hospital

The Patient Transporter is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of patients throughout the hospital using stretchers, wheelchairs, beds, and specialized transport equipment. This role supports patient care by ensuring timely transport services while maintaining excellent customer service, patient safety, and confidentiality standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Transport patients to and from patient care units, treatment areas, diagnostic departments, and other designated hospital locations.
• Operate stretchers, wheelchairs, beds, and specialized transport vehicles safely and effectively.
• Assist clinical staff with transferring patients to and from transport equipment.
• Deliver and retrieve equipment needed to support patient transportation and care activities.
• Assist with the care, maintenance, and cleanliness of departmental equipment.
• Respond promptly to transportation requests from dispatchers, schedulers, nursing staff, and clinical departments.
• Attend required educational programs, training sessions, in-service meetings, and departmental meetings.
• Adhere to all hospital safety policies and departmental procedures.
• Report unsafe conditions, hazards, or safety concerns to management in a timely manner.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

• Ability to obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare staff.
• Ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to use smartphones and basic technology for job assignments.

Preferred

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Two (2) years of customer service experience.
• Previous healthcare or patient transport experience.
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of hospital departments and facility locations.
• Understanding of basic body mechanics and safe patient handling techniques.
• Basic computer skills, including email, online learning platforms, and timekeeping systems.
• Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to maintain positive public relations and a patient-centered approach.
• Ability to work independently while following established policies and procedures.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment, professionalism, and confidentiality.
• Ability to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
• Ability to safely transport patients and equipment throughout the facility.
• Ability to maintain a clean, professional appearance and high standard of personal hygiene.
• Sensitivity to the needs of patients, families, and fellow team members.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk continuously for extended periods throughout the shift.
• Frequent pushing and pulling of transport equipment, often involving considerable weight.
• Frequent repetitive use of hands, fingers, wrists, and arms.
• Occasional lifting, lowering, bending, and crouching, which may involve considerable weight.
• Must successfully pass a back evaluation examination.

Work Environment

• Frequent handwashing required.
• Occasional skin exposure to diluted cleaning agents.
• Potential exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and infectious diseases.
• Frequent interaction with patients, families, nursing staff, clinical staff, and other hospital personnel.
