Job Summary:

Reports to the Manager, Environment, Health & Safety (EHS)

CF Industries is currently seeking Superintendent, Process Safety & Environmental to join our EHS Department, located at our Medicine Hat Complex. The Superintendent, Process Safety & Environmental plays an essential role in leading the people and activities necessary to provide effective process safety and environmental processes, programs, and services in support of safe, reliable plant operations that have no adverse impacts on the environment and the community in which CF operates.

You will be the champion for all key components of the larger EHS team to ensure that potential EHS risks are identified, evaluated and controlled.

Job Description:

What you’ll do:

  • Provide leadership, resources and direction for the process safety and environmental teams including responsibility assignment, performance expectations & evaluation, communication, and succession planning.
  • Be a leader in EHS culture by demonstrating, promoting, and developing processes, practices and activities that advance and sustain CF’s EHS culture.
  • Ensure the development and implementation of comprehensive written process safety programs, policies and processes that meet or exceed corporate, regulatory requirements. Work with facility personnel and leadership to ensure they are effectively implemented.
  • Provide EHS support and leadership to facility personnel through professional advice, training, mentoring and coaching with the objective of achieving an incident free workplace.
  • Utilize technical/engineering, operational and environmental knowledge to identify environmental improvement opportunities within the facility such GHG reductions.
  • Work with affected departments to ensure cross-departmental process safety elements are effectively implemented (such as contractor safety, MOC/PSSR, PHA/ LOPA recommendations, operational procedures, mechanical integrity, etc). Make recommendations for improvement to facility leadership when gaps are identified.
  • Administer Policies, Practices and Procedures related to the supervision of the process safety and environmental programs and staff, including budget and cost management.
  • As part of the EHS leadership team, build and maintain effective relationships with external environmental regulators to ensure CF is well-informed and has input into any proposed regulations. Identify and communicate any potential impacts to the facility leadership team of proposed/implemented changes.
  • Support and facilitate EHS initiatives such as audits, drills, exercises, etc. Provide additional EHS support when requested for turnarounds, outages, etc.

Required Skills

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng designation or ability to obtain), with 5 to 10 years of increasing responsibility and people leadership.
  • The following would be considered an asset but not limited to:
  • Environmental or Process Management Engineering experience
  • Industrial plant setting experience.
  • Experience with Environmental Regulators
  • Experience in an industrial plant environment/chemical manufacturing would be considered an asset.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated knowledge, skills, abilities and attributes to perform successfully in the key areas of People Leadership, Results Leadership, Thought Leadership & Self Leadership.
  • Time Management: Identifies, establishes priorities, and executes tasks to consistently deliver results within required timelines.
  • Complex problem solving: Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Coaching and training: Ability to empower others through active listening, collaboration, training, education and technical advice.
  • Judgment and decision-making: An understanding of your own personal knowledge and limitations when considering long and short-term decisions and recommendations.
