Want to help change the future of retail? Are you looking for a unique and highly visible role shaping Trust & Risk strategy at eBay?
Fast-paced, dynamic, and proactive, eBay’s Trust & Risk team is dedicated to making eBay a safe and trusted platform for the millions of buyers and sellers who make up the eBay community.
Key Trust & Risk initiatives at eBay span platform communications, seller protections and policy experiences, buyer and seller feedback, the eBay Money Back Guarantee, seller performance, new seller onboarding, and transaction risk management. The team is committed to maintaining and enhancing eBay as a safe and reliable marketplace while strengthening how we measure, understand, and reduce transaction-related losses. We continuously improve the customer experience while ensuring eBay remains a secure and trusted global marketplace.
As a Senior Data Scientist in the Trust & Risk team at eBay, you will serve as a strategic analytics partner to senior leaders across Trust, Risk, Product, Engineering, Policy, Shipping, and other partner organizations. You will shape analytical strategy across multiple complex workstreams, identify and prioritize the highest-value opportunities, and guide teams toward decisions that improve customer experience, reduce transaction risk and losses, and deliver measurable business impact. Your role will involve developing enterprise-level measurement and decision frameworks, connecting insights across risk vectors, and ensuring analytical investments are aligned to the most important organizational priorities.
Responsibilities:
Shape Trust & Risk Strategy: Define and drive analytical strategy across multiple Trust & Risk domains, identifying emerging opportunities and translating broad organizational objectives into measurable analytical priorities and workstreams.
Lead Strategic Insights: Apply deep business, analytical, and operational expertise to frame complex and ambiguous problems, synthesize insights across multiple areas, and influence long-term decisions with senior leaders across the organization.
Identify & Prioritize Opportunities: Develop a holistic view of customer experience, marketplace risk, and transaction loss to identify the highest-impact opportunities across Trust & Risk. Guide prioritization of initiatives based on expected customer, risk, and financial impact.
Define Enterprise Measurement Frameworks: Establish standardized KPIs and quantitative frameworks for customer trust, transaction risk, enterprise loss, decision quality, false positives, residual exposure, and return on investment. Ensure consistent measurement and decision-making across multiple workstreams.
Drive Accountability & Business Impact: Define business objectives and success measures across complex portfolios of work. Track progress, identify gaps, and ensure analytical recommendations translate into measurable improvements in customer experience, policy effectiveness, risk outcomes, and top- and bottom-line results.
Lead Across Multiple Workstreams: Provide analytical direction across several concurrent initiatives, connect insights across teams and risk vectors, identify dependencies and trade-offs, and ensure resources are focused on the highest-value problems.
Influence Cross-Functional Decisions: Partner with senior leaders across Trust, Risk, Product Management, Engineering, Policy, Shipping, Finance, and Design to shape roadmaps, prioritize investments, and drive alignment on complex decisions across organizational boundaries.
Raise the Analytical Bar: Provide thought leadership and analytical guidance to other data scientists and cross-functional partners, helping improve problem framing, measurement approaches, analytical rigor, and the quality of decision-making across the organization.
To be successful in this role:
Educational Background & Experience: BA/BS degree with 8 - 12 years (or Masters/PhD with 6+ years) of relevant experience across areas such as Quantitative Research, Analytics, Data Science, or related disciplines.
Strategic Analytics Expertise: Demonstrated ability to move from complex data and ambiguous business problems to clear strategies, priorities, and actionable recommendations with significant organizational impact.
Technical & Quantitative Depth: Strong proficiency in analytical and quantitative methods, programming (Python/R), and data querying (SQL), with the ability to assess and guide sophisticated analytical approaches.
Problem-Solving: Exceptional ability to structure highly ambiguous, cross-functional problems and create analytical frameworks where established approaches may not exist.
Portfolio Leadership: Proven ability to lead multiple complex analytical workstreams simultaneously, establish priorities, manage dependencies, and drive sustained business outcomes.
Business Judgment: Strong ability to evaluate trade-offs across customer experience, risk, operational complexity, and financial impact, and determine where the organization should focus.
Executive Influence: Demonstrated ability to communicate complex insights simply, challenge assumptions constructively, and influence senior executives and cross-functional leaders.
Cross-Functional Leadership: Proven ability to build alignment across organizations with different objectives and drive decisions without relying on direct authority.
Analytical Leadership: Experience mentoring or guiding other analysts and data scientists and raising the quality of analytical thinking and execution across teams.
Availability: Flexible and capable of working remotely across multiple time zones. Regular availability is required for meetings between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM (PDT).
Additionally, the following background and experience is helpful:
Significant experience in marketplace Trust, Risk, fraud, transaction risk, or related domains.
