Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented student research intern who is interested in developing skills in qualitative research, data analysis, and scientific writing. The intern will provide research support for the CIRA pilot project entitled, “Visualizing Inclusive Smoking Interventions and Overcoming Tobacco Use Disorder among People with HIV” (VISION), funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

Working closely with the research team, the intern will receive mentorship and hands-on training in qualitative research methods, including qualitative coding, codebook development and refinement, analytic memo writing, identification and interpretation of themes, and more advanced approaches to qualitative data analysis. The intern will gain experience critically engaging with qualitative data and contributing to an iterative, team-based analytic process.

The internship will also provide training in broader research and scholarly activities, including conducting targeted literature reviews, synthesizing scientific literature, developing research questions, interpreting study findings in the context of existing evidence, and contributing to scientific manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, and other dissemination products. Through regular mentorship and collaboration with the research team, the intern will develop skills in scientific reasoning, research communication, organization of research materials, and the responsible conduct of research.

This position does not involve participant recruitment, data collection, or direct contact with research participants. The internship is intended to provide a structured, mentored research experience for a student interested in gaining greater exposure to qualitative research, behavioral health research, and the process of translating research findings into scholarly products.

Required Skills and Abilities

1. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a research team, including participation in regular coding and supervision meetings.

2. Interest in developing skills in qualitative research, literature review, scientific writing, and behavioral health research; prior qualitative research experience is helpful but not required.

3. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to discuss interpretations, ask questions, and incorporate feedback.

4. Strong attention to detail and ability to organize and manage research-related materials accurately.

5. Ability to think critically and engage thoughtfully with qualitative data, including consideration of multiple perspectives and interpretations.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Supports and coordinates a range of academic programs. 2. Works on various programs throughout the year; including researching and writing of highly confidential material and working with other departments within the University. 3. Interacts with faculty, students and staff within and outside of the University. 4. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
