Ensure daily operations of the assigned laboratory sections to occur smoothly and efficiently and in conformance with applicable accreditation, certification, and regulatory requirements. Along with the manager and other section supervisors, technical oversight of the assigned laboratory section (Molecular, Quincy Urgent Care Laboratory, Point of Care, and pre-analytical department). Accurately, consistently, and efficiently perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical activities required for laboratory testing for pediatric/adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in compliance with laboratory, hospital, state, federal, and regulatory agency policies and procedures. This position also plays a key role in fostering positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring exceptional patient service and supporting a collaborative, high‑morale team environment.

The Supervisor partners closely with the Nurse Educator to ensure all point‑of‑care testing complies with laboratory regulatory standards. Job Description:

Job Description  Including but not limited to: 

  • Manages all aspects of moderate and high complexity testing at the Quincy Urgent Care Laboratory and testing assigned Milton Lab sections, performing any technical work required for the smooth running of the department. 
  • Oversees quality control activities (testing, processes, equipment) within the department. Oversees equipment maintenance and troubleshooting including documentation and validation. Oversees the scheduling of all daily, weekly, monthly and Periodic Maintenance for all analyzers and critical equipment Assists staff with training on proper procedures and coordinates equipment maintenance, calibration through delegation and assignment of specific tasks, and helps when needed during troubleshooting. Evaluates the need for new/replacement equipment and determines validation, training, and competency requirements prior to implementation. 
  • Develops and maintains the section procedures, submitting them for approval and reviewing them as regulations require. Identifies changes in accreditation agencies to amend policies and procedures, identify areas for improvement, and educate staff on changes to policies and procedures. 
  • Develops and maintains Quality Assurance activities for the department. Submits performance improvement initiatives to be included in the laboratory’s quality improvement plan. Conducts/oversees active surveillance of processes including but not limited to patient identification, appropriate ordering practices, incidents, near misses, etc.  
  • Oversee the Quality Program for the department and respond to incident reports. Participates in Hospital-wide quality initiatives. 
  • Provide initial orientation to staff assigned to section Assist the manager in the interview, selection, evaluation, and discipline of assigned personnel. 
  • Evaluate the competency of testing personnel. Assure the staff maintains their competency to perform test procedures and report test results promptly, accurately and proficiently. Reevaluate competency when test methodology or instrumentation changes prior to reporting patient test results. Identify training needs.  
  • Coordinate and participate in in-service education sessions relating to areas of specialty, training needs, and general laboratory in-services. Document of competency, training, and continuing education activities. 
  • Along with other supervisors, evaluate new laboratory products by making recommendations to the Laboratory Director with the objective of reducing unnecessary costs, biological and chemical hazardous materials whenever possible. 
  • Oversees department readiness for regulatory inspection including the College of American Pathologist (CAP) inspection and the Joint Commission and any other required inspections. 
  • Participate in HHS/CAP approved proficiency testing programs to commensurate with the services offered. 
  • Maintain a working inventory of supplies and equipment for the section. Ensure that section is maintained in a hygienically safe and functional condition. 
  •   Develop procedure manuals for sections according to ASCP and CAP guidelines. Ensure the section is in compliance with all CAP, TJC, OSHA, Federal, State and Local regulations. Review and update as needed, but at least annually, to ensure ongoing compliance. 
  • Maintain laboratory files and records such as daily logs, preventative maintenance, operating statistics, and quality control as per policy Prepares and submits section quality assurance and statistical reports in a reliable and timely manner.   
  •  Assist with local, state, federal, and regulatory agency for compliance and emergency preparedness activities. 
  • The Supervisor partners closely with the Nurse Educator to ensure all point‑of‑care testing complies with laboratory regulatory standards. 
  • Resolve LIS, eCW and any other reference laboratory ordering, processing, and resulting issues. Ensure that all resulting orders from clients' offices are correct and if not perform corrective action. 
  • Prepare and schedule of processor and phlebotomy staff to ensure that all areas of service are staffed adequately to ensure patient safety, quality and satisfaction are met. This includes all Outreach offices and Hospital locations. 
  •  Along with the Manager ensure that all IT and quality issues are addressed quickly and with positive outcomes. 
  •  Maintain competencies (position specific and hospital-wide) required for the specific patient population served. 
  •  Communicate department procedures and policies to non-Laboratory personnel. Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, in-services, workshops, outside conferences, additional courses, and/or professional affiliations. Participate in-service education activities. Read selected technical journals to maintain awareness of technological advances in specialty.  
  •  Perform job functions in a manner that promotes the safety and health of Beth Israel Deaconess Milton Hospital co-workers, patients, and visitors in BID - Milton Hospital. 
  •  Perform all duties in accordance with safety and other laws, rules, and regulations set forth by appropriate regulatory and government agencies and in accordance with established department and hospital policies and procedures. 
  • May be required to perform similar or related duties as may be necessary on an emergency basis or as designated by the department manager. 
  • All job functions are subject to change at the discretion of the Hospital Administration May be required to work off-shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call as is necessary to maintain laboratory services to the hospital. 

 

WORKING RELATIONS 

Position reports to: Administrative Director Laboratory 

Degree of supervision provided to position: Minimal 

Position supervises:  

Internal relationships: (works closely with): Microbiology Supervisor, Laboratory Director, Chief of Pathology and other Laboratory Manager, supervisors and staff, Nursing staff, Physicians 

External relationships: Patients, Physicians, Clients, Vendors, other hospital co-workers 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS 

The nature of the tasks/responsibilities required of employees in this position will likely expose them to blood or other potentially infectious material per OSHA definitions in OSHA document 29 CFR 1910.1030. Employees will be oriented to and required to understand and follow the standard precautions for infection control A summary list of tasks and procedures that may cause exposure to blood and body fluids is listed in the attached Physical Abilities Job Description Also identified is the personal protective equipment (PPE) that is available. 

 

Qualifications: 

Education, vocational training and experience: (minimum requirements of candidate)  

Bachelor's degree in a health-related field, chemical, physical, or biological science or medical technology from an accredited institution. 

 

Min Experience:  2-5 years of hospital based clinical laboratory experience required. Previous practice management experience in a medical practice and/or ambulatory setting and medical technologist experience preferred.

  • Oral Communication: Ability to verbally communicate complex concepts in English and address sensitive situation, resolve conflicts, negotiate, motivate and persuade others.   

  • Teamwork: Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, create a collaborative and respectful team environment, and improve workflow. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments.   

  • Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the Phlebotomy Team. Resolve services issues in a timely and respectful manner.   

  • Computer skills: Experience with computer skills required, including web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point.

Pay Range:

$100,000.00 USD - $125,000.00 USD

The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
