Description

Under the supervision of the Assistant Recreation Center Manager, the employee monitors swimming activities and enforces water safety rules and regulations; observes swimmers; rescues swimmers in distress; and administers first aid. The employee also performs routine cleaning and maintenance duties. Work is performed under supervision and is reviewed by the supervisor through discussions and observations. The employee answers inquiries and provides information pertaining to the aquatic facilities, schedules, and fees. The employee assists in pool cleaning and maintenance; checks and adjusts chemical balance of pool water; keeps the pool deck and adjoining areas clean and free of potential hazards. This job is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment background check and random drug screens.

Pool Hours:
Monday - Friday, 5am - 8pm
Saturday - 8am-8pm
Sunday - 12pm-8pm

Lifeguards are scheduled to work up to 19 hours per week, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Self-scheduling may be available on a first-come, first-serve basis so long as operational needs are met.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:   The following list was developed through a job analysis; however, it is not exhaustive and other duties may be required and assigned.  A person with a disability which is covered by the ADA must be able to perform the essential functions of the job unaided or with the assistance of a reasonable accommodation.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Lifeguard Activities. Monitors and performs activities in and around City aquatic facilities to assist and protect patrons as a lifeguard.
 
  1. Posts and distributes information of aquatic center activities for the public.
  2. Monitors patron behavior in and around the pool.
  3. Enforces the safety, pool, and center rules with the public and patrons.
  4. Maintains required certifications and credentials to include: lifeguard, automated external defibrillator (AED), cardio-pulmonary resuscitation for the professional rescuer (CPR-PR) and first aid.
  5. Identifies potential weather threats and monitors weather conditions to ensure safety; determines if lightning is present. 
  6. Monitors swimmers and visitors in the pool and surrounding pool areas.
  7. Identifies distressed patrons and responds to emergency situations by performing rescue and emergency interventions, lifesaving procedures and first aid, or activating facility emergency protocols.
  8. Ensures all safety and flotation devises and equipment are readily available and are in good working order.
  9. Communicates effectively with supervisor, patrons, and the general public.
  10. Uses the computer and other office equipment to enter data regarding patron’s use of the pool facilities.
  11. Represents the Department and City in a positive manner.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Pool Operations. Performs pool activities such as opening and closing the pool area, collecting fees, and monitoring patrons to ensure access for pool patrons and efficient operations.  
 
  1. Opens and closes the pool area for patrons. 
  2. Monitors patrons signing in to use the pool and ensures an accurate maintenance of such lists.
  3. Keeps immediate supervisor fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
  4. Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
  5. Assists with pool parties and events held at the pool.
 
 
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Pool and Facility Maintenance. Performs service maintenance activities on the water and pool deck and facility to ensure cleanliness and safety.   Performs testing of water chemicals and corrects/treats the water accordingly.
 
  1. Maintains a safe and clean pool, pool deck, and facility environment; scrubs and clean the pool deck and surrounding areas; skims the pool from removal of debris; cleans the skimmer baskets; and utilizes the aquatic vacuum.
  2. Performs tasks as required, utilizing established rules and guidelines.
  3. Utilizes specialized equipment and conducts tests to verify safe chemical levels of the water.
  4. Cleans and sanitizes pool after human contamination; closes and reopens pool when appropriate.
  5. Performs and interprets water testing results; responds and treats the pool water as indicated, adding chemicals as needed.
  6. Monitors stock levels of chemicals and notifies supervisor when supplies need to be reordered.
  7. Utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE).
  8. Maintains logs and records of water testing results and corrections.
  9. Performs basic custodial duties to maintain clean restrooms and facilities.
  10. Collects and empties trash.
 

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned.
 
 
  1. Possess the ability to read and write; with at least two (2) years of high school completed.
  2. Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.
  3. Previous work experience with the general public and working in recreation programs is preferred; or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the above listed knowledge, skills, and abilities commensurate with the requirements of this job.
  4. Possess and ability to maintain American Red Cross Lifeguard certification; lifeguard certification equivalent to American Red Cross will be considered.
  5. Ability to obtain and maintain CPR-PR, AED, and First Aid certifications.  
  6. Certification as a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) is preferred.
  7. Ability to work non-standard work hours to include extended, evening, and weekends.
  8. Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and an initial drug screen.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  2. Knowledge of the methods, principles, and techniques involved in lifesaving, first aid and water safety.
  3. Knowledge of specific lifesaving equipment.
  4. Knowledge of first aid, AED, CPR-PR skills (including adult, child, and infant age groups, as well as use of resuscitation and bag valve masks).
  5. Knowledge and skills in the areas of public relations, accident/injury prevention, patron, and facility surveillance.
  6. Writing skills to prepare logs, posters, and advertisements using correct English, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  7. Math skills to perform basic calculations and chemical proportions.
  8. Reading skills to interpret directions, ordinances, and codes.
  9. Ability to swim proficiently and effectively perform lifesaving duties.
  10. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  11. Ability to attend training classes and maintain required credentials.
  12. Ability to communicate effectively using written and oral methods, with other employees, and the general public.
  13. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, other employees, patrons, and the general public.
  14. Ability to respond rapidly and appropriately to emergency and life-threatening circumstance.
  15. Ability to use computers and office productivity software programs.
  16. Ability to operate office equipment to include multi-line phones, copiers, fax machines, typewriter, and others.
  17. Ability to follow required content and lesson plans for class instruction.
  18. Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  19. Ability to make appropriate decisions in emergency situations.
  20. Ability to perform light custodial duties.
  21. Ability to use specialized equipment and tools.
  22. Ability to perform first aid, CPR, and use emergency lifesaving techniques.
  23. Ability to lift and carry heavy items, including people.
  24. Ability to perform water rescues.
 

 Physical Demands
 The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 lbs., crouching, or crawling in restricted areas, and defending oneself or others from physical attack.
 
 
Work Environment
 The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g. working at great heights under extreme weather conditions, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
