The opportunity:
For our research center in Kraków, Poland, we are looking for a Research Scientist with strong expertise in software architecture for industrial systems.
In this role, you will shape and develop next‑generation software solutions supporting the digital transformation of power systems. You will work at the intersection of research and real-world applications—translating advanced concepts into scalable, production‑ready architectures used in mission‑critical energy systems.
As part of Hitachi Energy’s global research organization, you will join a multidisciplinary team of experts in software engineering, power systems, and AI. You will collaborate closely with business units and external partners to rapidly ideate, prototype, and validate solutions that have direct impact on products and customers worldwide.
Based on-site in Kraków, you will benefit from a strong local research ecosystem while engaging in global collaboration across regions and business domains. This unique setup enables you to drive innovation end‑to‑end—from early research and proof‑of‑concepts to architecture design and technology transfer into real systems operating in the energy sector.
How You Will Make an Impact:
- Collaborate with a global team of researchers and engineers in Hitachi Energy business units to identify and solve software-related real-world challenges in power systems.
- Propose, contribute to, and lead research projects related to the development of next-generation products and systems for power grid management, automation and control, IoT solutions, and mission-critical systems.
- Contribute at different levels, from ideas and proof-of-concept software development to architect-level discussions.
- Create software solutions based on various technology stacks, in cooperation with multidisciplinary teams across the entire Hitachi Energy organization.
- Propose, validate, discuss, and document technical solution concepts.
- Build networks across the company and actively share your knowledge and expertise.
- Collaborate with local and global external partners, including universities, open-source communities, startups, and vendors.
- Disseminate results through scientific publications, patent applications, and technical reports.
Your background:
- Master’s or PhD degree, or equivalent industrial experience, in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience in the architecting,designing and development of software-intensive industrial products and systems.
- Expertise in at least a few of the following domains: IoT edge solutions, Real-time systems, Embedded products, OS/kernel/driver development and tuning, Industrial networks
- Programming experience (e.g., Python, C++, C#, Java, Rust, shell)
- Deep knowledge of SW architecture theory, methods and tools, ideally with publication track record
- Willingness to combine conceptual activities with hands-on work
- Willingness to take an interdisciplinary approach, working with experts from domains beyond your own area of expertise
- Experience that demonstrates a team-oriented, innovative, and strategic working style
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken
In addition, the following skills would be beneficial for the role:
- Collaborative development and code quality practices in Azure DevOps or GitHub
- Agile delivery and iterative development practices
- Familiarity with data engineering solutions, on-premises and cloud-based
- Knowledge of, and experience with, products and systems for power grids, green energy, and related fields
- Basics of hardware development or electronics
- Proven track record of publishing research in reputable scientific journals and conferences
- Strong communication skills to effectively present research findings to both technical and non-technical audiences
