Description
Data Engineer
Department: Data & Engineering
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Canada
Compensation: CA$90,000 - CA$120,000 / year
Description
We are looking for an Intermediate Data Engineer to build and strengthen the pipelines that power our entire advertising operation. As we scale Data Platform 2.0 — our GCP-native data platform — we need an engineer who delivers reliable, well-tested work independently, takes real ownership of defined portions of the stack, and is hungry to grow into broader platform ownership alongside a senior team. You won't be designing the architecture on day one — but you will be trusted to build within it, improve it, and prove you're ready for more.
Key Responsibilities
Build and Manage Data Pipelines
- Build and maintain production ELT pipelines ingesting data from Google Ads, Meta Ads, and Microsoft/Bing Ads APIs — as well as CRM, call tracking, and lead event sources — into our BigQuery data ecosystem
- Own reliable Bronze layer ingestion for your assigned sources, with audit trails and no silent failures
- Extend and maintain API connectors (REST/OAuth2) within our established Cloud Run patterns, and troubleshoot integration issues to root cause rather than working around them
- Implement Silver layer transformation logic and contribute Gold layer Dataform models serving Command Centre, client reporting, and future AI/ML consumers — working from designs set by the Data Team leadership
- Raise gaps, risks, and improvement opportunities in the architecture proactively — bring a proposed approach, not just the problem
- Contribute to the CDMID join logic that unifies CRM, ad platform, and call tracking data into coherent lead records across client accounts
- Develop and maintain BigQuery data models for your assigned domains, applying dimensional modeling fundamentals with consistent naming, structure, and documentation
- Deliver clean, trusted, cost-metric-driven datasets that let our team move beyond vanity metrics to cost-per-issued-lead and cost-per-demo insights
- Write SQL & Python-based automation using GCP services — Cloud Run, Cloud Functions, and Pub/Sub — to orchestrate workflows and eliminate manual processes
- Monitor and tune pipelines and BigQuery queries for performance and cost-efficiency, flagging systemic issues before they compound
- Help graduate workflows off low-code automation tools and onto reliable, auditable pipelines
- Implement quality checks and validation on everything you ship — and treat testing & documentation as part of delivery, not an afterthought
- Proactively monitor pipeline health and resolve the root causes of data discrepancies, not just flag them
- Handle lead and client data responsibly: respect consent boundaries, follow least-privilege access practices, and avoid introducing PII where it is not needed
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Non-Negotiables
- 2–4 years of hands-on data engineering or analytics engineering experience with real production contributions — you've built and maintained pipelines that other people depended on
- Strong SQL and working Python proficiency for data transformation, scripting, and pipeline development
- Hands-on experience with BigQuery or an equivalent cloud data warehouse (Snowflake, Redshift)
- Practical experience integrating third-party APIs (REST, OAuth2) into data workflows
- Working experience with at least part of the GCP stack — or strong equivalent cloud experience and a demonstrated ability to ramp quickly
- Solid grasp of data warehousing fundamentals: staging vs. modeled layers, incremental loads, deduplication, and idempotent design
- Version control (Git) and code review as daily working habits
- Accountable for outcomes — you take responsibility for the reliability of what you ship, not just task completion
- Proactive — you ask scoping questions before starting work, surface problems you observe, and renegotiate timelines early when scope grows
- Quality-minded — you balance delivery pace with maintainability and avoid shortcuts that create downstream debt
- A clear communicator — you document decisions, flag risks before stakeholders do, and participate constructively in peer review
- Kaizen-driven — you leave systems better than you found them and raise improvement opportunities without being asked
- Direct experience with a major ad platform API (Google Ads, Meta Marketing API, or Microsoft Ads)
- Dataform, dbt, SQLMesh, or an equivalent transformation framework
- Pub/Sub or other event-streaming experience
- Background in performance marketing, ad-tech, or a multi-client agency environment
- CRM data pipelines (Salesforce, HubSpot, LeadPerfection) or call tracking data integration
- Prior experience replacing fragile low-code automation with production-grade pipelines
- Awareness of privacy-compliant measurement (consent signals, server-side tracking, PIPEDA/GDPR basics)
- Design the platform architecture solo — you will execute within it and inform it, with clear direction and code review from senior engineers
- Own media buying, campaign strategy, or client-facing reporting delivery — your role is the infrastructure that makes those possible
- Work in a legacy or on-premise environment — this is a fully cloud-native GCP stack
Benefits
- An incredible team and culture — high-performance, feedback-oriented, and data-driven, where everyone is empowered to succeed. Our culture thrives on collaboration, extreme ownership, and Kaizen. This is more than a workplace — it's a place where you'll grow, learn, and thrive alongside passionate teammates who are as invested in your success as you are
- Real ownership of production systems within a platform being built from the ground up — with a clear runway to grow your scope as you prove it
- Be part of the #1 fastest-growing marketing company in Canada, redefining performance marketing for the home improvement industry
- A modern, GCP-native stack with AI embedded in daily workflows — Claude and Gemini are tools you'll use every day, not novelties
- Exposure to AI/NLQ, MMM modeling, and ML optimization layers as the proprietary platform matures
- Fully remote work environment with the flexibility to work from anywhere in Canada
- 3+ weeks of paid time off annually, with the freedom to use them as you see fit
- Comprehensive group benefits including health, dental, and vision
- Company-provided MacBook Pro and home office budget to help you create your ideal workspace
- A work abroad policy to support you when you need a fresh perspective
- Merch deliveries and opportunities to connect with teammates at meetups and company-wide events
- A defined growth path toward Senior Data Engineer for those who demonstrate consistent ownership, quality, and impact
- Job-Type: Full-Time Permanent
- Standard business hours: 9am – 5pm EST
- Working Arrangements: Remote within Canada — Occasional in-office collaboration opportunities. Candidates must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
