Job Summary:

The Head of Compensation, Benefits & Payroll is responsible for the strategic leadership, governance, design, implementation, and operational management of all compensation, benefits, and payroll programmes within USBIPL.

The role ensures that Total Rewards programmes are market competitive, compliant with Indian legal and regulatory requirements, operationally efficient, and aligned with U.S. Bank's global reward philosophy. The position serves as a key advisor to senior leadership and is accountable for supporting the attraction, retention, engagement, and development of talent during the establishment and growth of the India GCC.

Job description:

Compensation Strategy and Design

Own the development and maintenance of India salary structures and job architecture within the global framework, ensuring alignment with global standards while adapting to local market conditions and regulatory requirements. Drive India benchmarking, pay modelling, and competitive analysis to support talent attraction and retention, partnering closely with global teams to execute annual cycle parameters and maintain governance consistency.

Annual Compensation Year-End Process

Lead the India execution of the annual compensation cycle, including modelling, calibration, risk adjustment, and communication. Oversee data integrity and reporting for the region, and collaborate with global teams on system enhancements and process automation to improve efficiency and accuracy.

Executive Compensation & Governance

Implement executive pay frameworks across India, tailoring them to local compliance and cultural nuances. Provide strategic input for Committee and Board reporting (as applicable), ensuring accurate India disclosures and alignment with global governance standards.

Benefit Strategy & Administration

Leads the delivery and governance of employee benefits programmes in India, ensuring they remain competitive, compliant, and aligned with the organisation's Total Rewards strategy. The role provides leadership and direction to the team responsible for the administration of medical, life, accident, wellness, retirement, gratuity, and statutory benefits, while overseeing vendor relationships, annual renewals, employee communications, and service delivery standards. Working closely with HR, Finance, Payroll, and external providers, the role monitors market developments, programme effectiveness, and cost trends to support continuous improvement and enhance the overall employee value proposition.

Payroll Governance

Leads the delivery and governance of payroll operations in India, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing through effective oversight of internal teams and third-party service providers. The role is responsible for establishing and maintaining robust payroll governance, controls, and operational standards, while partnering closely with Finance, HR, Tax, and external vendors to ensure compliance with applicable employment, tax, and statutory requirements. The role oversees payroll-related projects, process improvements, and vendor performance, while monitoring service delivery, regulatory developments, and operational risks to support a high-quality employee experience and the efficient operation of the organisation's Total Rewards framework.

Financial Management

Partner with Finance to ensure that the annual compensation expense remains within plan and annual forecasting incorporates compensation planning.

Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management

Partner with the HR Compliance Officer to ensure the accuracy of any reports or disclosures requiring compensation, benefit and payroll data. Maintain audit-ready documentation and lead responses to internal or external reviews, embedding robust governance and risk controls into all compensation processes.

Stakeholder Engagement & Advisory

Serve as the India subject matter expert for compensation, advising HR Talent Consultants and senior leaders on pay decisions and market trends, and act as a point of contact for compensation escalations, ensuring that escalations are handled in a timely and efficient manner. Influence stakeholders with clear insights on regulatory risks, competitive positioning, and pay-for-performance alignment to support strategic business objectives.

Team Leadership

Manage and develop the India compensation, benefit and payroll team, building expertise in compensation, executive pay, regulatory compliance, and analytics. Foster a culture of continuous improvement, development and capability building across compensation, benefit and payroll practices.

3. Qualifications and Experience Required to Perform Your Role

  • Generally, the role requires a degree or equivalent, but candidates with exceptional experience without a qualification to degree level will be considered.
  • Minimum of 12 years' experience in compensation, benefits and payroll management, preferably within financial services.
  • Demonstrable proven success in the design, operation and management of sales incentive plans.
  • Practical knowledge and understanding of key European compensation legal and regulatory topics applicable to credit institutions and investment firms.
  • Experience in developing, implementing, and managing risk and compliance associated with frameworks, policies, and procedures.
  • Proven track record of designing communications to senior executives and broader employee communications.
  • Demonstrable experience of interaction, influencing and reaching agreed-upon solutions at management and executive levels.
  • Proven track record of working independently on own initiative and delivering practical outcomes to a professional standard.
  • Proven resilience and ability to handle multiple priorities, meet deadlines whilst maintaining high work standards, with impeccable attention to detail in performance of all tasks.
  • Experience in managing different stakeholders including second and third lines of defense.
  • Collaborative approach with strong emphasis on delivery and execution.
  • Proven analytical skills.
  • Intermediate computer skills are needed, including experience with Microsoft Office applications.
