Schedule: Days (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM | Monday – Friday)
On-Call / Weekend Requirements: 24/7 Operational Responsibility; On-call as needed (Focus on coaching department leaders to manage frontline escalations)

Position Overview

A prominent multi-hospital health system in Des Moines, IA is seeking an Executive Director of Emergency Services & Nursing Operations. This executive nursing leader will oversee emergency care delivery, quality and safety outcomes, financial operations, and regulatory compliance across multiple hospital campuses (including adult acute care, pediatric, and specialty care settings).
The Executive Director drives strategic planning, operational standardization, and interdisciplinary care coordination while fostering a high-trust, safety-focused culture.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions

  • Executive & Administrative Leadership: Manage overall administrative, operational, and fiscal functions for Emergency Services and Nursing Operations. Develop annual budgets, allocate capital and human resources, and drive long-term strategic growth.
  • Physician & Stakeholder Engagement: Act as the primary administrative leader and liaison to service line physicians, medical staff committees, and external healthcare partners.
  • Multi-Campus Care Standardization: Align clinical care delivery and operational standards across all system campuses while respecting distinct patient population needs.
  • Quality, Safety & Compliance: Ensure full compliance with specialty designations (e.g., Level 1 Trauma Center, Primary Stroke Center, Nurse Residency accreditation). Promote a transparent safety culture and utilize evidence-based research to enhance patient flow and outcomes.
  • Leadership Development & Succession: Mentor, evaluate, and guide department managers and frontline nursing leaders to build strong succession pathways and minimize emergency call escalations.
  • Emergency & Disaster Preparedness: Serve in key leadership roles within the Hospital Emergency Incident Command System during critical incident responses and disaster recovery.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Experience
  • Education: Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) OR a healthcare/business-related Master's degree (e.g., MHA, MBA) [Required]
  • Experience: Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible healthcare management experience in a hospital, outpatient, or clinical setting [Required]
  • Track Record: Demonstrated success in improving clinical outcomes, managing departmental budgets, developing clinical programs, and leading multi-disciplinary teams [Required]
Licensure & Certifications
  • RN License: Active, unrestricted Iowa RN License OR a valid Multi-State/Compact RN License [Required]
  • Driver's License: Valid Driver’s License for work-related local travel [Required]
  • Specialty Certification: Professional certification in Nursing Leadership (e.g., NEA-BC, CENP) or Emergency/Critical Care [Preferred]
