Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues. 

Accountabilities

• Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
• Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
• Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
• Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
• Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
• Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

The Software Engineer will design, develop, test, and support modern enterprise applications while collaborating with product, engineering, architecture, quality assurance, and DevOps teams. The role is responsible for delivering secure, scalable, and reliable solutions, contributing to technical design and continuous improvement, and ensuring compliance with Barclays engineering and security standards.

Essential Skills

• Demonstrable experience developing and supporting enterprise applications using Java 17 or Java 21 and the Spring Framework, including Spring Boot, Spring Model View Controller, and Spring Security.
• Strong experience building modern user interfaces using React or Angular, with excellent knowledge of JavaScript and front-end development practices.
• Proven ability to design, develop, and maintain secure, scalable, and high-performing Representational State Transfer application programming interfaces and microservices.
• Strong understanding of software development lifecycle practices, including dependency management using Maven or Gradle, version control, code reviews, and engineering best practices.
• Hands-on experience implementing automated testing strategies, including unit, integration, component, and mutation testing, using tools such as JUnit, Mockito, Karate, Wire Mock, React Testing Library, and PiTest.
• Strong experience working with Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server databases, including data modelling, query optimization, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.
• Experience using logging, monitoring, and observability platforms such as Elastic and Kibana to support application reliability and production issue resolution.

Good to Have Skills

• Experience using GitLab or Bitbucket for source code management and collaborative software development.
• Experience supporting DevOps practices through automated build, deployment, and release pipelines using tools such as Jenkins and GitLab Continuous Integration.
• Knowledge of cloud architecture, containerization, and orchestration technologies, including Docker, OpenShift, and Kubernetes.
• Experience working in Agile delivery environments and leveraging Artificial Intelligence-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot, GitLab Duo, or equivalent solutions to improve productivity and software quality.
