S&B is actively searching for an experienced Civil/Structural Engineer to join our team. The Civil/Structural Engineer 4 leads engineering teams and oversees project execution, focusing more on strategic planning, team development, and delivery of high-quality engineering solutions. May also independently perform assignments requiring the application of standard design engineering techniques for a project of moderate size and complexity. Must be capable of exercising independent judgment in evaluating, selecting, and applying standard design engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to make design adaptations and modifications. Assignments are defined by clear and strategic objectives and require the comprehensive investigation and integration of multiple interrelated variables, demanding advanced analytical judgment, cross-disciplinary coordination, and the formulation of innovative solutions to complex challenges. This role emphasizes technical excellence, innovation, and adherence to corporate engineering standards.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Direct supervision of engineering staff assigned to a project. Provides technical guidance and coordination of assigned staff with other multidisciplinary teams. Responsible for performance management and professional development of assigned staff.

 

EDUCATION

 

Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum, or equivalent. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

 

Normally requires 6+ years of progressive experience in Civil/Structural Engineering (or equivalent working knowledge/experience). Registration as a licensed professional engineer is required. This position reflects an advanced level of professional practice in civil/structural engineering. It requires demonstrated expertise in core engineering principles, along with a strong command of industry-standard design software and automated engineering tools. The role involves leading technical analyses, developing innovative design solutions, and collaborating multidisciplinary efforts across projects of moderate size and complexity. Engineers at this level are expected to exercise sound professional judgment, mentor junior staff, and contribute to strategic planning and decision-making processes. Requires demonstrated working knowledge to manage teams and deliver complex projects.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead engineering teams in close partnership with the lead designer in the planning and execution of projects, while maintaining full responsibility for technical direction, resource coordination, and delivery of high-quality outcomes.
• Work jointly with the assigned lead designer to proactively resolve challenges, guiding decisions with technical authority, while fostering a culture of accountability and excellence within the team.
• Maintain primary accountability for project scope, schedule, budget, and staffing plans, ensuring performance outcomes while leveraging the lead designer’s contributions and execution support.
• Ensure alignment with strategic objectives, proactively identifying risks and resource needs, and implement corrective actions to maintain project delivery targets.
• Conduct design reviews and ensure alignment with client expectations.
• Mentor staff and promote continuous improvement.
• Interface with stakeholders and contribute to strategic planning.
• Perform structural analysis and design for complex systems, including evaluation of non-standard conditions and advanced loading scenarios.
• Develop engineering drawings and technical specifications, ensuring alignment with project goals and regulatory requirements.
• Conduct in-depth reviews of vendor submittals and coordinate resolution of technical discrepancies with project requirements.
• Facilitate technical collaboration across cross-functional and multi-disciplinary teams, driving technical excellence and integration throughout the project lifecycle.
• Contribute to the development and refinement of engineering standards, procedures, and best practices, incorporating lessons learned and emerging technologies.
• Ability to assume full engineering responsible charge for assigned projects.
• Apply advanced professional judgment and accountability as a licensed professional engineer, including peer review and technical mentorship.
• Ensure rigorous compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulatory frameworks, including interpretation and application of complex requirements.
• Manage and evaluate subcontracted technical services, ensuring alignment with project objectives, quality benchmarks, and contractual obligations.
• Consults with construction personnel regarding design constructability, providing input on field conditions, sequencing, and scheduling of construction activities to ensure alignment with engineering intent.
• Provides conceptual design input for preliminary project estimates, including estimate documentation and engineering estimates for work hours required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

 

Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of clients, managers, designers and engineers.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

 

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

Occasionally may conduct or participate in a field trip to an operating plant or construction site. This requires normal hearing, the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb and balance, clear close and distance vision, depth perception and the ability to focus. Lifting up to 25 pounds may be required.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

Normal work environment will be a business office with moderate noise. Occasionally may visit or be temporarily assigned to work in an operating plant or at a construction site. This may require exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, work near moving mechanical parts, electrical energy, construction equipment, vibration, fumes, chemicals and airborne particles.
