Description
About The Role
Smith Pump Company is hiring an Application Engineer based in our Austin office. You will be the technical point of contact for consulting engineers, contractors, and utilities on municipal water and wastewater pumping projects across Texas and Oklahoma. You'll take a project from the first spec review through pump selection, quoting, and order, and then manage it through delivery. This is an office-based role in Austin with periodic travel to our Waco headquarters for training.
What You'll Do
- Review plans and specifications and select pumps, motors, and related equipment to meet the application and the project requirements.
- Prepare estimates and quotations, and enter sales and project orders.
- Serve as the technical advisor to our outside sales team and to customers, answering questions on equipment, hydraulics, and specification compliance.
- Purchase equipment and materials for your projects and coordinate submittals and information flow between customers, vendors, and our internal teams.
- Manage your projects through delivery, keeping them on budget and on schedule and resolving technical issues as they come up.
- Work with sales, accounting, and operations to keep projects moving and customers informed.
How Success Is Measured
- Quotes are accurate and delivered on time.
- Customer requests for technical information get prompt, correct answers.
- Projects come in on budget and ship on schedule.
- Non-conformances are rare and customer satisfaction is high.
- Internal teams in sales, accounting, and operations can count on you.
Our Values
- Do The Right Thing: We do what is right for our customers, our company, and our peers, even when it's not the easiest path.
- Drive The Bus: We take ownership, lead by example, and are accountable for our responsibilities and actions.
- Learn and Teach: We continually improve our craft and share what we know with others.
What We're Looking For
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and technical specifications.
- Clear written and verbal communication with both engineers and non-technical customers.
- Willingness to travel to Waco for training as needed.
Preferred
- Experience with pumps or other rotating equipment.
- Exposure to municipal bid processes, specification review, or consulting engineering.
- Coursework or experience in fluid mechanics and hydraulics.
New graduates are encouraged to apply. New Application Engineers go through a structured training program covering pump selection, budgeting, and specification review.
Why Smith Pump
Smith Pump is a family-owned company that has served municipal water and wastewater customers for more than 60 years. We distribute, manufacture, and service pumping equipment, so the people who quote a project sit down the hall from the people who build and repair it. Our team is small enough that you'll work directly with the engineer of record and the contractor on your projects, and you'll be trained by people who have done this work for decades. We offer a competitive salary and a full benefits package.
