SAFETY COORDINATOR |
JOB LOCATION: Skyline Mine
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Coordinates and supports all mine safety, health, and regulatory compliance activities for the underground mine, surface facilities, and rail loadout.
- Supports the mine safety and health management systems to promote an injury-free workplace and a strong safety culture.
- Conducts regular underground and surface inspections, audits, and observations to identify hazards, verify compliance, and assist with corrective action follow-up.
- Assists with accident, incident, and near miss investigations, including Taproot root cause analysis methodologies, and tracks corrective actions.
- Maintains required MSHA records, reports, training documentation, and compliance records.
- Coordinates and conducts new miner, annual refresher, task, contractor, and other required training programs.
- Works closely with MSHA inspectors and regulatory agencies during inspections and compliance activities.
- Provides guidance and support regarding safe work practices, hazard recognition, and regulatory requirements.
- Tracks safety performance metrics and assists with improvement initiatives.
- Coordinates emergency preparedness activities, evacuation drills, emergency response planning efforts, and mine rescue readiness activities.
- Conducts safety meetings, toolbox talks, and training sessions.
- Coordinates and administers the Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) program, including facilitator training and employee engagement activities.
- Assists with maintenance and verification of underground monitoring systems, controls, and gas-detection instrumentation.
- Collaborates with mine management and supervisors to support safety goals and compliance efforts.
PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of three to five years of experience in coal mining, industrial safety, or a related field.
- Experience in underground coal mining operations is preferred.
- Associate or bachelor's degree in occupational safety, Industrial Hygiene, Mining Technology, Mining Engineering, or related field preferred.
- Working knowledge of MSHA regulations and underground coal mining practices.
- Current Utah Mine Foreman Certification preferred.
- MSHA Approved Instructor Certification preferred.
- Mine Rescue Team experience preferred.
- Current First Aid/CPR Instructor certification preferred.
- Familiarity with underground monitoring systems, controls, and gas-detection instrumentation preferred.
- Experience administering Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) programs and conducting facilitator training preferred.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Experience conducting workplace inspections, incident investigations, and safety training programs preferred.
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and safety management software preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Ability to walk long distances underground and on surface mine facilities.
- Ability to lift and carry safety equipment and training materials.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators and self-contained self-rescuers, as required.
- Ability to work in underground mining environments that may be wet, dusty, noisy, and confined.
