About the Role
Total Wine & More is seeking a Data Scientist, Operations Research to join our Data Services team in Bethesda, MD. In this role, you will develop and implement optimization and decision-science solutions that support business decisions across areas such as pricing, inventory, supply chain, and marketing.
You will translate defined business problems into mathematical models, evaluate potential solutions, and help integrate model outputs into business processes and production workflows. This role requires foundational experience in operations research, data analysis, and software development, along with the ability to work independently on routine to moderately complex assignments. You will collaborate with more experienced team members and business partners when addressing unfamiliar or challenging problems. This role reports to the Senior Director, Data Science.
You will
- Develop mathematical optimization models, including linear programming (LP), mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), and related techniques, based on defined business objectives and constraints.
- Design and implement optimization solutions using Gurobi or comparable solver technologies.
- Assess business requirements, available data, and operational constraints to determine appropriate modeling approaches.
- Evaluate model results through scenario testing, sensitivity analysis, and validation to confirm that solutions meet defined business needs.
- Implement optimization outputs within established production workflows and business processes.
- Develop and maintain data pipelines that support modeling workflows and promote data quality, availability, and reliability.
- Resolve routine modeling, data, and performance issues, escalating more complex challenges when appropriate.
- Develop scalable and maintainable code using Python and SQL in accordance with established development standards.
- Facilitate discussions with business partners and cross-functional team members to clarify objectives, constraints, assumptions, and expected outcomes.
- Communicate modeling approaches, assumptions, results, and recommendations in a clear and practical manner.
- Monitor model performance and recommend adjustments based on business needs, data changes, and solution results.
- Contribute to team knowledge by sharing technical approaches and providing guidance to less-experienced colleagues when appropriate.
You will come with
- Bachelor’s degree in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A master’s degree in a related field is preferred.
- 1–4 years of relevant experience in Operations Research / Optimization or related fields preferred
- Hands-on experience with Gurobi (strongly preferred) or similar solvers (CPLEX, OR-Tools, etc.)
- Proven experience building and deploying large-scale mathematical models (LP, MILP, etc.) in production environments
- Ability to design and maintain data pipelines for large-scale modeling workflows and experience working with large, complex datasets, including feature engineering and data validation
- Proficiency in Python and SQL, with emphasis on scalable, maintainable code
- Familiarity with cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP) for scalable execution
