Are you experienced in industrial automation, controls, or project estimating and looking to apply that knowledge in a new way?

CLX Engineering is seeking a Controls Estimator to support the development of accurate and competitive estimates for industrial automation and material handling projects. Our work spans a variety of industrial/process automation sectors, including wastewater, food & beverage, processing plants, conveyors, and baggage handling systems.

We recognize that the right candidate may not come with extensive experience in both industrial automation and estimating. We are looking for someone who brings a strong foundation in either industrial automation/controls or estimating, along with the technical aptitude, attention to detail, and willingness to develop in the other area.

Key Responsibilities:

• Analyze project plans, specifications, drawings, and requirements for material handling and industrial automation proposals to develop accurate cost estimates.
• Work closely with project managers, engineers, sales, subcontractors, and other internal stakeholders to gather information and ensure estimates align with project requirements.
• Review project scope and supporting documentation to identify missing information, potential risks, cost exposure, and areas requiring additional clarification.
• Conduct site visits and inspections as needed to better understand project scope and identify potential challenges or opportunities for optimization.
• Use Microsoft Excel to prepare detailed cost breakdowns and Microsoft Word to develop clear and professional bid proposals.
• Maintain organized and accurate estimating documentation throughout the bidding process.
• Apply practical knowledge of industrial automation and controls systems when evaluating labor, equipment, materials, and overall project requirements.
• Partner with internal teams to help minimize project exposure, reduce unnecessary costs, and improve the accuracy of project estimates.
• Provide support as needed for business development efforts, including occasional client meetings, conferences, or project-related travel.

Requirements

• 2+ years of industrial automation/controls experience in a technician, controls, programming, design, engineering, or similar capacity; OR
• 2+ years of professional estimating experience, preferably within construction, manufacturing, material handling, industrial, electrical, or other technical project environments.
• Candidates who are stronger in one discipline should demonstrate the aptitude and willingness to develop their knowledge in the other.
• Industrial automation candidates should have a practical understanding of controls systems, components, and terminology and understand how automation systems are designed, installed, and implemented.
• Experience with baggage handling systems (BHS), material handling, conveyors, or industrial automation is a strong plus.
• Ability to read and accurately interpret construction plans, specifications, drawings, and technical documentation.
• Strong Microsoft Excel skills for developing and maintaining detailed cost estimates.
• Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Word skills for preparing bid documentation and proposals.
• Strong attention to detail with a methodical and analytical approach to reviewing project scope.
• Ability to identify missing information, potential scope gaps, and cost considerations that could affect the accuracy of an estimate.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple estimates and priorities simultaneously.
• Clear and effective communication skills for collaborating with internal teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and other project stakeholders.
