Salary: Up to £24.15 per hour
(depending on level of experience, training and qualification)

We have an opportunity for a Optometrist to join their team of staff in

the Ophthalmology department.

This is a bank role working on an “as and when required” basis, you will be required to supplement staffing levels during busy periods and provide cover for existing staff in times of annual leave or absence.

Duties of this role include:

  • Undertake comprehensive eye assessments including vision testing, visual acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP), and pupil reactivity.
  • Support pre- and post-operative care for cataract, refractive, and glaucoma patients, ensuring clinical safety and continuity of care.
  • Instil dilating and anaesthetic drops, administer prescribed medications, and assist with minor ophthalmic procedures.
  • Perform or assist with diagnostic tests including OCT scanning, visual field testing, corneal topography, and retinal imaging.
  • Work alongside optometrists during refraction clinics, cataract assessments, and contact lens reviews (where trained and within scope of practice).
  • Monitor patient outcomes and escalate clinical concerns in accordance with protocols

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Registered Nurse (Adult) with valid NMC registration.
  • Experience in ophthalmology, outpatient clinics, or surgical eye care.
  • Skilled in visual acuity testing, drop administration, and ophthalmic observations.
  • Strong communication, clinical judgement, and patient care skills.
  • Ophthalmic Nursing or Optometry Support qualification.
  • Experience in optometry-led services (e.g., cataract assessments, refraction support, glaucoma monitoring).
  • Training in diagnostic imaging (e.g., OCT, visual fields).
  • Familiarity with private practice settings and electronic health record systems.
