Crossing Guard

Purpose of Position

The Crossing Guard is responsible for the safe movement of children to and from school when crossing public roadways and intersections by observing gaps in the traffic and leading the children across the roadway or intersection. Crossing guards are not to engage in traffic direction or control.

Position Accountability
General day-to-day supervision, administrative direction, and performance evaluation shall be received from the Village Clerk.

Supervision Exercised
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

The following provides an overview of duties related to this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Works 1-2 shifts per day, Monday through Friday, during the public school year (September through June), that range from 30 minutes to 1 hour. There are specific hours for each location and may vary according to demand and workload.  There may be opportunities for additional shifts during summer school.

• Assists children on their way to and from school and other pedestrians in safely crossing roadways and intersections.

• Informs motorists, through prescribed signals, that children are using the crosswalk and have the right to proceed; Report motorists who violate guard’s directions within 24 hours.

• Watch for gaps in traffic and walk children across the roadway or intersection while holding a stop sign in such a manner as to be visible to approaching vehicles.

• Responds to and interacts with the general public, school children, employees, and/or others within and outside of the organization in a courteous, professional, and effective manner.

• Follows all safety regulations, policies, and procedures; reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor; reports all accidents to the supervisor immediately whenever possible; follows recognized safe work practices.

• High school diploma or equivalent is required, and must be at least 18 years of age.
• Maturity and sense of responsibility towards children who use school travel routes that fall within the assigned locations.
• Ability to monitor traffic flows and identify natural breaks in traffic flow.
• Ability to judge the speed of moving vehicles and to make decisions regarding the stopping for vehicles and its effect upon traffic control.
• Must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Must have the ability to deal effectively and courteously with associates and the general public.
• Must have the ability to make sound judgement.
• Shall be in physical condition that will permit adequate job performance.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand for long periods of time and walk and carry a sign that is under 5lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

• The work is performed primarily outdoors with the potential for extreme heat or cold.
• Requires use of retroreflective vests and other apparel.
• There is constant interaction with the general public.
